I took out my P4 2.0ghz CPU and installed a 3.06 GHZ with HT in my Abit IT7.
I got the latest bios first.
Anyway it seems to run OK and it says Hyper Threading detected while booting
up so that seems to work.
If I do anything intensive like a 3D action game or a 3D benchmark, it just
reboots. I thought it might be heat at first so I ordered a Swiftech
MCX478-V http://store.yahoo.com/sidewindercomputers/swmc6.html
It still happens when set to a 133 bus speed. If I turn it down to about
110mhz, it seems ok but I am only at 2.5Ghz. Immediately after it reboots, I
look at PC health status in the CMOS. It shows around 56-60 degrees C. Is
this too hot? I tried increasing and decreasing the CPU voltage with no
luck.

Any ideas? Did I get a bad CPU?

Mike

you need to run some monitoring software like Motherboard Monitor (available
at: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://mbm.livewiredev.com/" target="_blank">http://mbm.livewiredev.com/</a> or on my ftp server at the address below
under /utilities) and see (with logging capability) what your temperatures
are reading. from what you are seeing in the PCHealth section of the bios,
things look a tad warm for my liking. maybe you have a case airflow issue
or something going on with the heat sink mounting still?

I second TomG's suggestion. I too have an IT7 and a 3.06GHz P4 currently
running a modest 145MHz FSB at default voltages. The stock fan was a POS
while the stock HS was acceptable. I ditched both for a Zalman 7000AlCu
"flower" and the CPU temps dropped by ~10C idle and quickly drop back down
after load.

I'll second that aboout the Zalman. I've got one on my 3.06, not the alcu,
just the cu. Mine runs flawlessly at 158 FSB 24/7.

Don't know if this will help but was just reading a review on the board and
found this: Subsystem Testing

Audio - CPU Utilization

One of the most important aspects of any high performance system is the
audio subsystem and the impact of that subsystem on the CPU's performance.
An out of control audio subsystem could eat up precious CPU cycles during a
critical deathmatch maneuver, resulting in stuttering graphics or even a
momentary screen freeze. In order to measure the CPU utilization of the
audio subsystem, we use Ziff Davis' Audio Winbench.

Good Luck, Rich

It's most unlikely that you got a bad CPU if you purchased a sealed retail
box. In addition to what the others have said about monitoring temperatures,
some further questions for you:

1) Are you running an SMP aware operating system, and if so did you
reinstall it after fitting the HT capable processor?

2) What brand and type of memory are you running, and with what FSB to
memory bus divider?
