Hello All,
MY new Ic7-G motherboard is a very nice unit but the onboard chipset
fan went bad ( EXTREMELY noisey) at the 2 month mark. Web emails to Abit
tech support went unanswered so i called. Sadly i spent way too long on
hold - long distance - and then got a very nice but extremely had to
understand person on the phone.
I did manage to get the following
1) they know the fans are bad
2) they can ONLY exchange the entire motherboard instead of the fan
3) i can ( and did) get a new OEM fan from excalibur.com which i paid for
replacement was easy

Or just don't bother with a fan at all. No chipset really needs it, a good
passive heatsink (like one made by Zalman) will be just as adequate and
make less noise!
Cheers,

Ok if the case is well ventilated but...
these days chipset get hot, so having on them a small fan is not a bad
idea, but lowering their voltage supply (if not having problems
starting) to 5V or maybe 7V is Ok. noise is much reduced & not to
repeat the problem is wise to grease it the bearing a bit
under brand sticker with some light grease (better than just oil it!)

Yes a well cooled case likely does not need that fan and mine fits that
category but still it is part of the motherboard and Abit should make a
bit more effort to address this concern. Surely it would be LESS
expensive to ship out a fan than exchange an entire motherboard and the
serial number for the motherboard would prove i had their unit. If they
wanted the old one back then - well i could send it - ...I am just
miffed that they ignored me. Lots of motherboard makers out there and
service after the sale is a big factor for me.
It's not a big deal since i rarely keep motherboards more than 18 months
anyway but it should work.
as for a passive heatsink (aka zallman) - that would likely be a very
tight fit in my water cooled case and since it runs so cool I will
forego that.
thanks

Because he knows I'm right. Abit are a bunch of numbnuts expecting
customers to either send their mb back to Abit just for a fan
replacement or have the customer pay to fix it themselves by buying a
new fan. Last time I sent a mb back to the manufacturer it cost me
$20.00 CAD just for the courier service. Go to hell Abit.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Ic7-G - onboard fan problem |
