I have a homebuilt PC, with the K7S5A 1.1, an XP 1700 CPU with OEM heatsink and
fan, 256M Kingston RAM, and assorted drives, etc, running under W2000.
Sunday night, I finished converting some raw DVD to MPEG. Only thing open was
Adobe Premier, and Outlook Express. (This is a dedicated AV machine, not online,
ever). I double-clicked on the new .mpg file, and the PC froze. It occasionally
bogs a little, so I just left it and went to bed. Monday, PC was still locked
up, so I did a hard reset.
At this point, things start looking bad.
The monitor will not come out of standby.
The PC does not POST. It never checks the floppy drive or spins the HD's, but
the lights do flash a couple times on the CD drives. (Normal boot sequence: FDD,
HDD, CDR).
The CPU and PS fans spin right up, so it appears to have power.
I can disconnect the monitor, and get the video error that there is no signal,
so the monitor appears fine. Swapped out another video card, same problem.
Thinking hardware conflict, (Even though I have changed nothing in this PC in
months) I pulled everything out of the case, down to the video card and RAM.
Still nothing.
On a hunch, I pulled the RAM, and rebooted. No beep codes indicating a RAM
error. I also pulled the video card, and rebooted, still no beep codes.
Reset CMOS, no change.
Any ideas? suggestions?
TIA,
Mike >> Stay informed about: K7S5A V1.1----it's dead Jim?? |

Until you get further advice, try one or more of these:
1)Unplug the PC and then use the Clear CMOS jumpers to reset the BIOS.
2)Borrow and try another CPU.
3)Try a different PSU.
4)Check for bulging or leaking capacitors.

My K7S5A 1.1 had bulging capacitors (the large ones to the left of the
processor) when it went belly-up last month. The power supply was toast
also.I still don't know which caused which to fail (the old chicken or the
egg syndrome).Replaced it with a K7S5APRO from Newegg($42) and an Allied
400w power supply and all is fine.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: K7S5A V1.1----it's dead Jim?? |
