Can one of you kind folks help here?

I had a K7S5A v 1.0 running Win XP quite happily on an Athlon XP
1600+.

I got what I thought was a bargain on ebay - an XP 2000+ for £47.

Processor arrived today, plugged it in, fired it up. First thing I
noticed was that the Bios said DURON, and 192Kb cache instead of 384.
After much investigating (downloading AMD's CPUID prog) it appears
that although it's labelled as an XP 2000+, everything says its a
Duron. I've got another K7S5A running an Athlon 950. I tried it in
that. Duron.

That's by the by. I removed the chip & put my old XP 1600+ back

However, no matter what I do, I now can't get the CPU/RAM timings back
to 133/133. They are stuck on 100/100 in the Bios, and I can't change
them! The ram is a single stick of 512 DDR that until today ran at
133.

I've tried the following:

Reset CMOS jumper.
Reflash BIOS (10/29/02 version)

Nothing. It's stuck and running at 1050 instead of 1600.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

-Desperate Dave

Does'nt that board have a hardware jumper on it for FSB adjustments? I used
to do those boards and I could swear it had the jumper on the board.

Nope. It's all in the BIOS and he got an older board that doesn't
support his CPU.The later BIOS fixes it :O)

quick fix for your immediate problem, pull the battery out, and short out
the leads to erase cmos settings. you should be then able to set it for
133. Better fix is to update your bios, then you can use that 2000+

I thought he said he'd reset cmos and flashed latest bios. Sounds like some
other prob.

ta for the comments. I took it over to my friendly local PC shop, and
he verified it as an XP 2000+ in a test PC. So it looks like it's
some compatibility problem with the K7S5A board (both of them).

The guy did mention that it was a Thorougbread core, and that might
cause probs. Apart from seeing on ECS site that the K7S5A supports
Palomino, I know nothing about this. Does anyone know if K7S5A
supports these new chips or not?

When I get home tonight I'll try some serious diagnosis. I managed to
install the Honey X bios yesterday which allowed me to get the
clock/ram speeds back up to 133. Now to see if it recognises the
chip. If not...anyone want to buy an Athlon? Smile

Indeed he did state that, as anyone who would have correctly read the
original post would have seen. I'm assuming that since he hasn't
responded he may have worked through his issues on his own.

Yes, I finally managed to get it sorted (kids permitting). Flashed
with Honey X bios, which allowed me to increment the fsb/ram speeds
back up to 133/133. Now says Athlon 2000+ at boot, so all ok. Just
boards being temperamental I guess.

cheers all
