Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>soyo (more info?)

Last year I built 36 systems for a local school based on the K7VTA-pro
Barebones system from Tiger). Today, I was doing a little maintenance and
found 4 out of 6 chipset fans frozen. This is not the first time I have
found this. Pull the fan, remove the bottom label, apply a little silicon
spray there and around the middle of the fan and all is well. I first
emailed SOYO with this problem about 8 months ago - of course they denied
any problem. They did offer to sell me new fans for $5.

So, if you're seeing intermittent problems, check that chipset fan.

I've also had to replace 8 of 36 power supplies for the fans going out.
Again, SOYO says there is not a known problem. Also had 5 of the on board
sound chips die - I found it was easier just to put in an inexpensive sound
card rather than messing with RMA'ing the mbd and having the system down
for 3 weeks. Again, SOYO says there is no known problem with them.

Have to admit, the ones that haven't had problems do run well.

Configuration:
K7VTA-pro ( not ver 1.0)
XP 1700+
XP Pro
256 mb ( 2 x 128)
WD 20gb 7200
GF2 MX400
DVD/CDRW

Seems to be adequate for whatever K-6th graders and the teachers use em for.
