Hello,
I'm looking to buy an LCD monitor, preferably 19" to 21", and I'd
like to know which one accepts the widest range of frequencies, or
resolutions, especially *low* resolutions.
On some old PC programs, I get a blank screen when trying to run. It
says "Frequency out of range". Sometimes it's frustrating because old
VGA or SVGA monitors do the job, but a new LCD monitor you pay high price
seems unable to display such basic software.
There is also video card issues, I think. I'll give you an overview chart
of my testings:
Old 15" Mag, 17" DEC Most new LCDs Some new CRTs
19" Hansol (all CRTs)
XT w/Paradise Working Fails Some working/fail
8-bit 256K
386 w/Oak VGA Working Fails Some working/fail
Old Pentium 90 w/ Working Fails Some working/fail
Diamond Stealth SVGA
Most modern Compaq Not tested Working Working
PCs (in stores now)
Some other New Not tested Fails Some working/fail
PCs (in stores now)
Also, most ViewSonic CRTs (even older ones) fail where other CRTs work.
I'm quite puzzled, and I'd like to know which new LCD monitors will display
correctly.
I also went around the city, visiting computer stores with new computers,
and my program on a diskette. There are maybe 8 monitors connected to the
same PC via video switch, so I plugged my disk in and executed the program.
In some stores, all monitors worked, and in some other stores with a
different PC, most monitors fail with the exception of one or two. So
I'm even puzzled if the problem is a matter of the videocard it's run on
or it's the monitor which is the problem. It lets me think it's both.
Anyway, I want to run these old programs on the XT, so the main thing for
me is to find a new monitor that will accept frequencies with the
Paradise 8-bit videocard. I want to use the same monitor with a modern
PC, using a KVM switch.
Anyone has any monitor brand to suggest?
Thanks.

LCD monitors are designed to work well at just ONE resolution, typically
1280 x 1024. They are NOT CRT's...

You are probably running those older programs at a low resolution and
therefore a higher V-refresh rate than let's say @1024x768 or @1280x1024.
So you should first check which V-refresh rate you are actually using for
those low res mode programs of yours and then reduce that rate to something
a LCD can handle. That's usually something around some 60...70...75Hz.
Don't forget that fv can be much lower on a LCD compared to a CRT without
running into flicker problems, due to the different physical principle
behind it.

So do you mean CRTs will never die? Especially smaller monitors; the ones
that handle lower resolutions.
I think it's a video card issue too. The SAME LCD monitor that fails the
test on a particular PC is successful on another PC (w/ different video
card), and the PC where the LCD monitor fails is successful on a CRT
monitor.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: LCD monitor accepting wide frequency range? |

Thanks for the tip.
How can I check which V-refresh rate this particular program is running?
If it's out of range, how can I reduce it?
The program is a DOS-based game. You just type the program name and hit
ENTER. Is there a TSR or some kind of program to force set up V-refresh
rates?

Yes. And LCD's are better for the eyes for that reason. But what would
prevent a LCD to use higher refresh rates?
Thanks.
