Post subject: MP3 Player index??
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware (more info?)

I know this is a bit off topic for this group, so if you can direct me to a
better group to post this question, please do so.

I got a nice 10 gig MP3 player from Tiger Direct. It holds about a ton of
music, but I am having problems managing all the files. MP3s ripped from
factory CDs index OK, but those I got from Napster and Kazaa are all screwed up
in the menue system.

For example, I have a Temptations folder with about 3 dozen of their oldies,
but when I search for them on my player, I will find them all over the place.
Some as Artist "Temptations" some in various albums by the Temptations, some
in various genres or tracks.

Please help! How can I get all of an artist's files to sort by the artist
name, or by albums? I have almost 2000 tracks so searching by track is tedious
at best.

the MP3 files must be tagged somehow with Artist, album and Genre data; is
there any way to edit this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

You need a tag editor, I use this one:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.4musics.com/All-in-one/Mp3Tag-Studio.htm" target="_blank">http://www.4musics.com/All-in-one/Mp3Tag-Studio.htm</a>
there are many others.....
Also look at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://mysite.verizon.net/xico/" target="_blank">http://mysite.verizon.net/xico/</a> for lots of tips on
managing mp3s etc. etc.

You can edit the ID3 tag using WinAmp or even using windows, if you're
using XP (not sure about Millenium).

Winamp, when you get the mp3 into the playlist, you can right click on
a selection and get "info". A window will pop up letting you edit the
information. click "update" to save the info to the file. On
earlier versions, you have to stop playback to update it. v5
automatically pauses playback long enough to update the file.

WinXP lets you change the ID3 tag on an MP3 by right clicking on the
file and calling up the properties. I think it only lets you change
the ID3 V1 tag though. The V2 extended properties might not be
supported.

There are also stand alone ID3 tag editors available as freeware. You
can probably find a few listings in the tucows directory.
