Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard (more info?)

Motherboard is a W6178, which appears to be an MSI motherboard, but it
is not stamped "Microstar International" on the motherboard, just "MSI
W6178" and REV:1.1. The BIOS reports "W6178M8" at boot, so I assume
it's version M, but I'm not sure what the "8" at the end is for. These
are "Blue Light Specials" apparently made for KMart, which the owner
of the company I work for picked up for a song. Smile No docs or
anything. Sad

We ordered some 256 MB dimms from an online vendor. When they arrived,
they only registered as 128 MB dimms. The vendor states this is a
known problem: "The most common problem associated with this problem
is that you purchased a high density module and you PC needs a Low
density module."

My question is this: Does this motherboard support "high-density"
dimms? The systems are running bios version Award V6.00 PG.

Thanks...

..

256MB DIMMs with eight 32Mx8(256Mbit) chips are common now, and are not
supported by your motherboard.

Your 6128 supports memory chip densities up to 128Mbit. You will need a
256MB DIMM that uses sixteen 128Mbit chips. It should be a 256MB DIMM
with sixteen 16Mx8(128Mbit) chips. Avoid the cheap, generic 256MB DIMMs
that use sixteen 32Mx4 chips.

Look up your motherboard in Crucial's memory selector, to find modules
that are guaranteed compatible: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.crucial.com" target="_blank">http://www.crucial.com</a><!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
