Making a Hard-Wired Dvorak Keyboard

well I've been typing exclusively Dvorak for over 15 years and Qwerty a
good 20 before that. I put a "Map" of the Dvorak key layout on the corner
of my monitor and went from there. 2weeks I didn't have to look much,
2months I was back to my old speed. haven't looked back

past 5 years or so when I got a new keyboard I didn't bother relabling it
still is marked in Qwerty, I call it extra security. it types Dvorak and
that is all I am worried about. mine is software mapped and there is a
small icon in the bottom corner of my screen that will switch between the
layouts if someone else needs to use the computer.

Bob,

If you can learn the Dvorak system without the keys on the keyboard
then power to you. I know it would be difficult for me. I am also very
interested in the Dvorak keyboard but I want the keys to be labeled and
besides I like the more ergonomic designs that use the QWERTY layout better.
I'm hoping that some day the Dvorak layout is more accepted and we have
more choices. Until then it seems like a compromise. I've also heard that
it's hard to switch between the two formats for most people but others can
make the transition quite easily. Some keyboards can be purchased that have
keys that are marked both qwerty and Dvorak. As a matter a fact you even
suggested in an early post in this thread for the original poster to "buy a
Dvortyboard keyboard." Anyway I sure hope that they become more popular
but I'm not holding my breath. They've been trying to make Dvorak a typing
standard since 1932.

Jeb, it sounds like you're looking at the keys when you type on the
Qwerty keyboard. If so, I doubt if Dvorak will help your speed as
looking at the keys slows one down so much.

But it might be an opportunity to learn from scratch how to type
properly so you become intuitive instead of plodding. I've found by
putting a box (can be cardboard) over the keyboard with a cutout for
one's hands helps people learn their keyboard faster. Also you could do
like Bob did and put a keyboard map on top of the box and only look at
it when necessary. I guess it might be like learning a new language.
If we always have a translator nearby, it often slows down our learning
rate.

I've never considered seriously the merits of Dvorak typing, what with
the future promising high accuracy speed recognition software, but for
one reason or another, that hasn't arrived and it may be a long time
before it really gets accurate. Also speech recognition allows no
privacy for yourself as well as often disturbing others close by. So it
looks like the skill of typing will be needed for a long time to come.
