I have Minolta DiMage Z2 with 512MB SD card. I am thinking of buying a fast
4GB SD card

Is there a size limit the digital cameras can handle?

Yes, it depends on the controller in your camera. Read your manual.

Be aware that some cameras will handle larger cards than the manual says if
the manual was written before the new memory size for a given card format.
