Hi...

I just acquired what appears to be a brand-x hard drive: Mediamax. Has
anyone ever heard of this? Google turns up nothing except software with the
same name.

Never heard of them, but a google search suggests it is a re-badged Seagate.
A MediaMax 500GB has serial number ST3500630AS, which is a seagate drive!

A pretty decent one too, if my memory of model numbers hasn't failed me.

Never heard of them either. You have a picture? Various manufactures
have different shapes on their hard drives. Yes, essentially it's a
rectangle, but sometimes the corners are rounded in a particular
fashion, or a decorative ridge on the top plate. It's almost certainly
a rebranded drive.

The picture is without the cover, not as easy to recognize. Kinda
funny how they advertise a hard drive as a "major brand."

The picture looks western digital-ish. But I'm not real sure.
