Quick one.

What would be the best motherboard I can possibly buy for gaming as well as
overclocking. Budget it pretty much limitless. And what graphics card and
processor etc would you reccomend.

Thanks

Hmmm, tough one. I'd probably go with the Asus PC-DL Deluxe, which uses the
Intel 875P chipset, and add two Xeon 3.06 CPUs and a ton of RAM.
In addition to manual features, it also has "AI overclocking", which means
it overclocks itself when it feels it's safe, up to 15%.
And yes, Xeons *are* faster than similarly clocked Pentium 4s, as well as
compatible.

Otherwise, the new (to be released in a week or two) Asus SiS 649-based
motherboard is a good choice. It uses PC1200 quad-pumped RDRAM, for a total
memory bandwidth of up to 9.4G/s -- that's 50% more than the competition.
What's good about it is that from an overclocker's perspective, you can
reduce the FSB/RAM ratio and STILL saturate the FSB, which should allow you
to overclock the CPU even higher.
The downside is of course that you have to buy the special and rather
expensive Samsung 232-pin 32-bits RDRAM. (For PC1066 32-bit RDRAM, in case
you want to overclock, you can also buy it from Corsair or OCZ, but it's
really Samsung RAM that has been repackaged, and just as expensive.)

Anyhow, the SiS 649 might just be an overclocker's dream, barring it doesn't
suffer from performance issues like the 648 did. Initial tests indicate
that SiS got it right this time, though.

Regards,

Hi,

I've Asus p4p8x, 533, 2.66 ghz at 3.13 running (could be faster, i've
only 1 PC2100 512 MB memory, though you can put dual 256 MB in it at
PC2700), about Eur 100,00.

Look for the manuals on the Asus-site. 800 would be p4p800 deluxe maybe.

For gaming, look at the new Athlon 64...
I have a P4C 2.6 myself, running on a DFI LanParty 875Pro. (@ 3250 MHz Wink )
I like the processor (got it cheap) and the mainboard too (also a lucky
break). The main thing against it, is the maximum DDR voltage; only 2.7
volts. But well, my PC2700 (XMS 3000, okay) is running @ 400 MHz dual
channel, so the memory unit is very well built...

But AMD's are very strong at gaming... But, they've been released just
shortly, and i dont really know which mainboard is the best to have.

And the graphics card, if limitless budget, the Radeon 9800 XT, of course
Wink Fastest and (almost?) most expensive card available... Get one from a
decent brand; Powercolour has a bad rep in alt.comp.periphs.videocards.ati .

Uhm, no. Far from it. In the *consumer* class, sure. But I'd take a
FireGL X2-256 over the 9800XT any day. (They use the same VPU.)

If speed is secondary to visual quality, I'd go with the Parhelia HR256,
which with its quad DVI can drive 9MP displays (up to 3840x2400 native
resolution, or 9 megapixels). Of course, $2500 for the graphics card and
another $5000 for a display is not exactly cheap, but hey, if you need that
kind of resolution, that's a killer. You can even run it as a second card
in a PCI/PCI66 slot if you still want the Radeon 9800XT (or FireGL) for
games Smile Hey, the guy said almost limitless budget!

Regards,

No such thang as best mobo, and if there is one today, it'll change
tomorrow. Money is the limitation and if that is no prob to you then ask for
the ultimate machine. NF7S is a good mobo for us regular O/C type folks.
Also for non-oc folks!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

nForce2 chipset based for sure. I recommend Abit NF7-S plus Athlon XP 2500+
(BARTON). On the other hand there is a new Abit MoBo I've heard about just
a bit.. AF7 - just look for some more info and make up your mind Smile

I would also look at the Athlon64. The situation is still not clear on
motherboards though, so it would require more research than you may be
qualified for.

Erm, sure, BUT, did you read the original posting? The OP asked for
gaming/overclocking performance... The FireGL is better in OpenGL
development st*t, of course, but it's gaming performance is at best equal...

Didn't Tomshardware just do a comparison of Athlon 64 boards?

Dual Opteron 248's on a Tyan Thunder K8S (make sure you get the one with
onboard SCSI), and chuck in four sticks of registered PC3200 (say a gig per
stick) for good luck. Motherboard doesn't give much for overclocking, but I
don't think 248's will overclock too well anyhow (not even sure you'd need
to ...). For a gaming graphics card, I'd say the ATI Radeon 9800XT's the top
of the heap at the moment. Since budget is not too much of a problem, I'd
say go for a Raid 0+1 setup on four Cheetah 15K.3 drives (go for the 73 gig
versions for plenty of high-speed space). Oh, and you'll need a pretty
grunty PSU ...
