Post subject: Abit NF7 ver 2.0 clean install but NO SOUND!!
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

I have just put together a computer system consisting of

An abit NF7 none S ver 2.0
A 1700+ TBred B
9500 pro
and Mushkin Value Ram 512megs worth.

I have installed windows xp home edition, i went through and updated
all of windows along with sp2, all went smoothly, all drivers updated,
I got the latest Nvidia system drivers and ATI video drivers.
Everything works great, except there is no sound!?? I dont understand
I've worked with computer for years and I know that the mute isnt on, I
checked both the nvidia system utilities and the windows speaker
volume, both are set to on. The nvidia utility has a configuration
process that you can go through, I set it up and during the test I hear
nothing from the speakers, I can start a song in winamp or media player
and see the equalizer bars bumping to the sound in both
winamp/mediaplayer/nvidia system utility programs. I went into bios
and I see that the audio is enabled, any ideas? Please help.
I did a google group search but I am only running into people with
issue using their 5 speaker setup. I only have a 2.1 logitech system.
I've checked all jacks, and my headphones, i'm just feeling lost, I
will try and update the bios and see if that will resolve it, but so
far i dont see it as an issue in the FAQ from abits site.

Saruji.

Have you tried looking under NV Mixer and Output to see if anything is muted
(a crossed speaker icon)? Could be that Wave is muted. Or try muting it and
then unmute it again. This has been cheating on me a couple of times.

I notice you did not try to plug in a headset to see if the problem
may be the speakers?

I don't think a bios update will change anything but be caeful you get
the correct bios for version 2.0. You may want to go to
www.nvidia.com and get the latest platform drivers - unified drivers
5.10.

Good luck,
Al

<snip>

I know it's probably too obvious but I have seen this several time - are you
using the rear (motherboard) audio sockets but have a front audio cable
connected?

I have tried a headset and they do not work either. The same speakers
work in my old computer, and I havent tried to connect the front panel
audio plugs. Grrrr, this is now happening on 2 boards, so i'm guessing
that its something i'm forgetting to install, that or the setup is
conflicting with each other, they are pretty much identical setups.

Go into the Control Panel, Sounds & Audio devices and see if it says
Nvidia(R)NForce(TM)Audio. Go through all the Tabs and make sure
everything there is set up properly.

Did you get a file called nForce_5.10_WinXP2K_WHQL_english.exe from
Nvidia and install it?

I was just at the Nvidia website and downloaded the nForce audio
driver 4.62 and installed it. It did not install properly and not
only did I not have sound and it screwed up a whole bunch of devices.
Check out your device manager for yellow exclamation marks! I
restored my system.

My guess is that the file(s) at Nvidia may have been corrupted.

This could be a really dumb question, does the board have jumpers between
pins 5 and 6 and pins 9 and 10 on jumper block FP102 at the back of the
board between PCI slots 2 and 3? You will get no sound if they are removed.
