| We have a PC that had a junk Samsung CDRW/DVDROM combo drive in it,
which got returned under warranty. The replacement is a Toshiba-Samsung
H492. Plays DVDs very well. The only problem is that Nero does not
recognise the drive for recording. The only type of recorder that can be
selected in Nero is the virtual "Image Recorder" device. Any ideas?

If Nero came with the drive, it is probably fixed to work only with that
brand / model of drive. Did any software come with the new drive?
Otherwise you might have to get a full version of Nero.

I had a similar problem just a few days ago. It even new that I have a
drive in my computer, but it wasn't allowed to select it. Nero basically
stated that it works only with the writer that the software came with.
This means that it's an OEM version of the software, and what you need
is either an OEM version for your drive (not recommended) or a RETAIL
version that works with all supported drives.
The second possibility is it doesn't recognize the drive. I had this
once with an external drive. But to my knowledge this was the problem
with only this specific model, namely HP 8210 (if I recall correctly).
If that it the case it is likely that the problem is documented in the
FAQ or other documentation of the software or on the net.
Take care

I can't see why CloneCD should be the problem - if it isn't running, it
isn't relevant.
To the OP, was Nero a version that was bundled with the original drive?
Often those versions will not work with any other model of drive other
than the one they were supplied with.
Try CDBurnerXP Pro3, it's free.

I got an OEM copy of Nero Express that stated it only worked with the
branded drive I got it with. Imagine my surprise when I found out that
it works with all my burners. I have three burners, one Ricoh CDRW,
one Lite-on combo DVD/CDRW (Nero came with this one) and one Lite-on
DVDRW and the copy of Nero Express I got works with all three. I guess
Nero effed up and I got lucky.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Nero doesn't detect CDRW drive |

Another problem is that all of EA's new games won't install with
CloneCD or Alcohol120% installed. The games installation process
detects these progs in the registry and refuses to install.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Nero doesn't detect CDRW drive |

That's quite a vote of confidence in CloneCD and Alcohol120%
There are legitimate uses of CloneCD, though, so I wonder where
retailers stand with EA games if you decide to return one because it
wouldn't install.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Nero doesn't detect CDRW drive |

Nope. I have two PC's and I have the same copy of Nero Express
installed on both machines so that drive it came with isn't even on
the one PC and Nero still works with the DVDRW drive on that PC. The
Installer says it is badged but it isn't for some reason. Doesn't
really matter as I also own Roxio CD Creator and could use that but I
like Nero better.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Nero doesn't detect CDRW drive |
