I recently purchased a Minolta Dimage S414. I have tried different NiMh
batteries with various results. I was wondering if someone can tell me if
my problems are normal.

I tried Olympus 1200mah batteries and I can get about 10 pictures before
camera won't work.

I tried new SunPak 2100mah batteries and I also get about 10 pictures before
the battery status is low and the camera dies.

I now have new Eveready 1450mah batteries and these last about 40 pictures.

Is this normal? Shouldn't NiMh batteries last more that 10 pictures?
How is it that the lower power Evereadys last longer than the 2100mah
SunPak?

Should I discharge the NiMh before I use them?

Do you think my camera is defective?

Thanx

Olympus and SunPak are *&^$ !!!

The life will extend as they are used more, though I'd opt for the Eveready
or Ray-O-Vac 2100 mAH.

Use an appropriate charger and make sure it's not a NiCAD unit (or switched
to that setting if dual).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I've got 12 AA Panasonic 1950's for my Olympus D-550z. BJ's store: 6 (NiMH, AA)
batteries with recharger, $20; plus another set of 6 batteries (AA, 1950's,
NiMH) for $10. I get about 200-300 pictures plus a download per set (4
batteries). Flash pictures really can cut that down, much worse than using the
LCD (which I keep on for 3 hours at a time while shutterbuggin').

If that doesn't do the trick for you, check in for service.

NiMH batteries need 3-5 full charge and discharge cycles before they operate
at their peak efficiency. If you have not fully discharged and charged the
batteries 30-5 times, they will not give you full performance.

I don't know your specific camera, but I get about 150 shots on two AA 1850
mah Kodak NiMH batteries in my Olympus 520, much better even alkalines.

Bad news, the Minolta Dimage s414 and s404 are a hunk of junk. I have
had nothing but headaches with my camera a s 414. I have probably only
taken 39 pictures with the camera and used many sets of batteries. I
think the camera needs a high powered battery pack. The pictures are
okay but you can only take 5 or 6 at night.Yikes
I just upgrade to a Casio QV-R51 the best move I have ever made. I
took that hunk of junk Minolta out to the trash heep. Out it goes!!!!
My Minolta days are over.

If 2100 ones last less than 1450 ones, than batteries are defective (or
maybe brand new? - they will become better after 3-5 cycles).
I can make over 500 shots onmy Canon S1 IS with 2300 mAh set - mixed with
and without flash and i always use LCD. Someone elsewhere told that Minolta
are quite battery eaters, but still, i doubt that 10 shots is max.
If you have quick charger (like i hour type), then it's not good to charge
full or partially full batteries - depends on charger type, since some of
them can detect when full batteries are inserted, but not all. But, at the
end, batteries are empty, at least this is what your camera says...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
