I'm trying to decide between those two. One plus for the Canon is that
one can use ordinary AA batteries, making it easy to continue shooting
if one's rechargeables lose their charge. It doesn't seem as if one
can use AA's with the Coolpix. Is that true, and am I missing
something in thinking there's a disadvantage to needing more
specialized batteries?

The specialized batteries ar not as cheap but pack more power for it's
weight, and as usual it's recommended that you get one extra so you
have one spare (set) if one goes out - but that's also the case for AA
batteries.

On the other hand, the A80 is quoted as not using more power than the
record-breaking A70. With 50% use of the LCD I have seen numbers in
the 900's in reviews (and that was with Powerex 1800mAhs - nowadays
2100 or 2350 mAhs are available)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
