Hi,

My local computer shop sells LG DVD burners (OEM). I would like to
get one, but before I do, I have a question about a firmware
upgrade... should I decide to go that route. On the LG site it states
that the firmware upgrades they provide for download should not be
used for any OEM drive or else you'll end with a paperweight. My
question then is, where do I go to get the (firmware) upgrade? These
are not bundled burners supplied with an IBM, Compaq or HP machine, so
I can't go to a computer manufacturers site, these are just drives
sold as OEM rather than in the retail box. Could someone please help
me?

Appreciate the time and effort.

All the best.

-Danielle.

You neglected to mention what drive you're talking about, but if
you're talking about the LG 4040B drive, you can get the 301A update
for it here:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=16" target="_blank">http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=16</a>

I couldn't find a link from their own site, but the link on that page
grabs it from LG's own servers.

Since some drive companies make a distinction between OEM and Bulk
drives, I'm not sure if the OEM and bulk drives are the same (I bought
the bulk version), but the update worked fine for mine.

The only weirdness I ran across (other than having to do an end-round
to get the update) was that unlike firmware updates with every other
drive I've ever owned, they want you to put the drive on Secondary
Master to do the flash. This means that a drive shuffle is in order
if you've got the drive on any other position.
