I Camedia Master Siftware really as basic and awful as I think? I am
more than willing to be corrected. Becauswe otherwise I have to simply
copy and paster, then open some othert software and work with the
files.

Do I have to use CM view and transfer images from my Olympus C750?
Other software does not see the camera as a capture device.
 - the CAMERA seesm to have more power!

Camedia does not seem to allow manipulation of images on the camera:
deletion, inspection etc.
 - even my el cheapo webcam had some software/drivers that allowed
other Multimedai software to do this via USB, as a Twain device.

Camedia does not allow viewing each image until it's in a "Album"
(whi9ch AFAICS is a sort of overlordx of files, and not individual
files that I can then edit in a halfway decent programme).

So I have to transfer all files to disk, then use something with real
power to edit, select, delete. etc.

really. Is this unpleasant mess all a mistake?

just plug the camera into the pc's usb port - in 'my computer' the camera
will show up like another hard drive - just copy the files off it from here
and edit them in any application you like ie photoshop

Most folks on this NG seem to think as you do. The easiest way to transfer
files is with a card reader. It is easier to take the card from the camera,
download the files to the computer, and put the card back, than it is to
connect the camera itself to the computer.

Hmmm...interesting.
Maybe that's what I need.
I, too, have a C-750 and have had no end of trouble with the software (Camedia)
when trying to download images to my PC. Then, I got rid of any trace of the
software and resorted to directly having the camera driver communicate with the
computer (as removable drive "E"). It worked once but when I tried later (using
the USB port) the computer failed to recognize the camera connection!!! I have
just about had it with downloading.

Which card reader do you recommend? I assume it is connected to the PC via a USB
connection?
Thanks!

P.K.

I've had a Lexar for about three years, and I've been happy with it. I'm
not sure that it is actuallty better than the competition, though.

I think of a card reader as a tool that is useful beyond cameras. I use it
to transfer files, for example.

Phil Knox,
If the Camera connection worked once, then it will work again.

You need StillImageMonitor running. It must be loaded at Startup.

To check Start>Run. Type msconfig, click OK. On the Startup tab look for a
check mark beside StillImageMonitor. To make sure all drivers are being
loaded, on the General Tab, tick Normal Startup, then Click OK. Reboot the
computer.

All should be working now.

OK.
Thks for the tip.
I checked msconfig and always have "Stimon" running. Also, have checked "normal
startup". Will let you know after several attempts at d/ling pics.

Follow-up...

I took a single pic, turned the camera off, connected the USB patch cord, turned
the cam on in the "arrow" setting on the top dial and it d/led (or is it really
"uploaded"?) the pic to the PC. I opened "my computer" and then clicked on "drive E
(removable drive). Into two folders and then saw the pic...no prob.

With the cam still attached an on I deleted the pic from the folder and it deleted
it from the camera too. Neat! Then I turned the camera off, unplugged the patch
cord and proceeded to take a couple of new pics.

I turned the cam off, connected the USB cord, set the dial to the "arrow" setting
and turned the cam on. The LED light flashed once but not a second time as per
usual. Then windows opened up a message saying that new hardware had been detected
but it did not register it. I checked in system properties (right clicking on "my
computer") and in "devise manager" under USB controllers, it showed an "unknown
device" with a red X.

I think I have a serious problem somewhere!!!! Help!!

Phil

any reason for it to behave better.

BTW, anyone know of any good Olympus forums. I am on a steep learning

Thanks Rich.

I have done what you suggest. I will have to get PSP or whatever.
Camedia allowed thumbnails, and other stuff I have does not.

Why would these bundle such an awful piece of software? I know bundled
stuff is usually pretty ordinary, but this SUX!

Can't justify a few pounds for a USB card reader
which will make downloading photos totally easy?

No. Most of them have decent driver software, which is
more than can be said for the software provided to hook
the camera up to the PC. If you have a spare card, you can
use the reader as an extra drive when you're not using it
to download photos.

Hi Phil,

Wow, You do have a problem! Ha, Ha.

I assume Windows 98, XP is not the same, XP has an automatic process.

Please read the instructions for installing and using the USB driver in your
Camera Manual. There are also instructions to see if the driver is installed
correctly.
If you have the PDF version of the C-750 manual, it starts on page 215 of
238.
http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/C750UZ_Ref_Eng.pdf (8.7MB)

Look for the title:
Installing the USB driver for Windows 98
(When using Windows 98/98 SE)

With Windows Explorer, look at your Camedia CD, Look for a folder
\USB\Win98. In that folder there should a file named Uninstal.exe, Double
click (run) to uninstall the failed installation.

Do the Install of the USB driver again per the instructions in the manual.

If the above procedure does not fix the problem, then do the following:
Try deleting the yellow or red marked entry in Device Manager. (Click on the
line, then Click Remove). Reboot the computer. You may need the Camedia disk
and the Windows CD.

Let the computer complete installing the USB Driver for the Olympus C-750.
If you have to point the Hardware Wizard to the location of the USB driver,
it is probably in a \USB\Win98 folder on the Camedia CD.

I would avoid deleting pictures with the PC. Only delete or format the
memory card in the Camera! The main danger of deleting pictures with the PC,
is if anything goes wrong, you are screwed.(pardon the Language!) You should
only Copy the picture(s) from the camera to a folder on the PC. Do not use
Cut or Delete on the PC.

Well, for me it's not a few pounds. I was quoted Aud$99 for an XD
reader.

>No. Most of them have decent driver software, which is

I have yet to experience any problems. I have hooked up the camera
several times now, simply see it as a drive, and copy stuff across. It
auto-connected when I plugged it in, which I have been told is a
feature of the C750. The software to _view_ the stuff is crap, but the
drivers seem OK so far.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean leave an XD card (or
whatever) in the reader and use it as a drive for the PC? To what
purpose? Or do you mean something else?
