Post subject: Opinions on specific models
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>dcameras (more info?)

I did a search on J&R's website (http://www.jandr.com) for cameras with a
minimum of 4 MP, 3x optical zoom, and less than $650. (My company gets a
corporate discount with them, somewhere between 10-15%) Here's the top 5
list it came up with. Does anyone have any opinions?

1. Olympus C750, $599 (lower price available), 4 MP, 10x zoom (!)
Check out a sample pic! http://users.rcn.com/shinkang/1.jpg

2. Pentax Optio 550, $550, 5 MP, 5x zoom

3. Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart 935, $400, 5.1 MP, 3x

4. Minolta Dimage F300, $500 (lower price available), 5 MP, 3x

5. Sony DSC-P10, $500 (lower price available), 5.1 MP, 3x

To find out the "lower price available", you have to put the camera in the
shopping cart; for my purchase, I'd have to call our account rep.

My interest is mostly family snapshots and holiday pictures. I'm especially
interested in the zoom because we are going to Disney World in December. I
have a Fuji Finepix A101, which is a super little snapshot camera, but has
no zoom. (My pics are at http://ellewiz.smugmug.com.)

Thanks!

I'd say that all of today's 5MP cameras in your price range are quite good,
but remember, "good" is a relative word and that beauty is in the eye of the
beholder.

That said, have you been to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.steves-digicams.com" target="_blank">www.steves-digicams.com</a> or
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.imaging-resource.com" target="_blank">www.imaging-resource.com</a> ? Pros and Cons of many cameras are discussed there
(sample pictures included), read on and depending on your needs, compare and
decide what feature is more important to you and what problem you can live
with. There are several things to consider. Other places to read comments
from actual users are <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.epinions.com" target="_blank">www.epinions.com</a> and <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.amazon.com" target="_blank">www.amazon.com</a>
After doing your homework maybe you'll come up with only two models to
choose from, then repost your question here or on rec.photo.digital. For
family snapshots and holiday pictures, any 5MP should be more than enough

Personally? I'd avoid the HP like the plague and I'd go with the Olympus,
but I'm biased.

Cheers,

Thanks! I practically live at Epinions and Amazon, but I've never been to
the other two.

Also, have you considered a good 4MP camera for a lower price? For snapshots
you may not need 5MP, and if it's your first digital you need to consider
additional expenses like enough digital media, battery charger/batteries and
a good photo editor like, say, Photoshop Elements or PaintShop Pro. And
maybe a couple of good books! Minolta S414, Kodak DX4330, Pentax Optio 430,
and Canon S40 come to mind.

Cheers,

-Jorge

To be honest, now i have Olympus C300 with 3x zoom, but in your case, i
would definitely go for 10x zoom above all. It's not that important that 5M
as long as you won't make A4 or greater enlargements. But big zoom is the
king (i mean Optical one, forget digital)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Actually 3MP would probably do the trick as well. Just look for the
highest in Optical Zoom like Sleeperman mentioned.

4 or 5MP is nice if you really want to rework the pictures and/or make
blow-ups of cutouts.

Hope this helps
