this is the first I have heard of someone putting SATA optical onto a SATA
controller... is this a true SATA optical drive or are you using a
Serillel-2 adapter? if using the adapter, that is not supported for ATAPI
devices.

It is if it's a Serillel 2 but not if an original Serillel.
if it is a trus SATA device I didn't realise that any were in the wild yet
although I knew that Plextor was about to launch a true SATA DVD-R/RW .<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have read and been told that even Serillel-2 does not support ATAPI
devices... but his problem could easily be proved out if it was a situation
where an adapter was in use... just put it onto a PATA channel and see what
happens.

Hi again,
I should have included more info in my first post, sorry.
Yes the drive is a Plextor PX-712-SA a native SATA device. It has no
legacy power or I/O ports. I have not been an 'early adopter' but
needed a DVD burner so settled on the Plextor assumming(key here) that
the Max 3 w/ 2/4 SATA ports
would be able to support it. I see from this forum and others that I
am out front with this device. The Hitachi drives are NOT in a raid
array. SATA 1 supports 3 o/s's, and SATA 2 supports a data drive.There
is a dvd rom on IDE 1.
Bios is 1.6. 'On Chip Serial ATA' set to 'Enhanced'. 'Onboard PCI
Device'-'Serial ATA Controller' Enabled, 'SATA Raid ROM' Enabled.I
have tried variose combinations in the BIOS without success.
Any further advise will be greatly appreciated and will also help
others as they switch to SATA optical drives.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hello again,
I posted a lengthy reply but it seems to have evaporated, so here we
go again.
I should have included more info w/ my original post.
The Hitachi drives are NOT raided. SATA 1 supports 3 os's, SATA 2
supports a data drive, IDE 1 supports a DVD ROM. The drive I am trying
to install is a Plextor PX-712-SA. This device is native SATA, there
are no legacy ports or jumpers.I had hoped to install this drive to
the Silicon Image controller via SATA 3-6, but cannot get past the
boot issue.
The question that is most pertinant is: Does the SI controller support
SATA optical drives with this current BIOS (1.6)? Or is support yet to
come from Abit? SATA has been slow to enter the market as there are
only 2 SATA opticals available to my knowledge. I had hoped that the
MAX 3 w/ 2/4 SATA ports would be the board to use for all SATA,
but....?
Any further help would be appreciated by myself and any others who use
SATA optical drives.
