After taking adive from this newsgroup I finally went out and bought a new
set up (more money than I wanted); but still there is no point taking advice
unless you take it
I finally purchased:-
Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
450Watt SmartPower 2.0 Power Supply
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Intel E6600
2 GB of DDR 800 PC6400 Ram
etc etc
I am in the middle of putting it all together (so far so good); but I have a
small problem with one of the cables that came with the Sonata
Case.........it has a block (with 8 connectors, one of which is blanked out)
saying audio and from this same cable it has 7 other connections saying:-
MIC
FPOUT L
FPOUT R
RET L
RET R
MIC BIAS
MIC
Am I correct in thinking the audio block plugs into the block (next to CD
audio connection) called AAFP and no doubt the other 7 connections go to the
block next to it called ADH. If that is correct could someone PLEASE tell me
which connector goes to which pin
Many thanks as always

Yes, it's a Front Panel Audio connector. The other single-wire
connectors are just duplicates of what are on the block connector
and are ONLY needed if your motherboard and case use different
standards for the FPA. Plug the block connector in and check
that audio is working on the case socket - basically plug headphones
in. If it does work, ignore the single-wire connections.
If not, get the mobo manual out and plug each one onto the pin
the manual specifies.
The ADH connector is for High Definition Audio and I doubt very
much that you can use it for anything at present. Don't plug anything
into that one.

Computer cases are still using the AC97 wiring pattern. And the list
of signal names shown for the Antec seem to match that. In the Asus
P5B Deluxe manual, the right hand definition is the one you want.
In other words, you are matching the computer case AC97 wiring, to
the Asus motherboard which will run the header in AC97 mode, to match.
You need to connect a total of five wires, using the loose wires.
MIC -----------> MIC2 X X AGND <--- AUD_GND
MIC_BIAS -----> MICPWR X X NC
FPOUT_R --> Line_Out_R X X NC
NC X
FPOUT_L --> Line_Out_L X X NC
NC = No Connect
X = a header pin
The AC97 header definition doesn't use the jack sense pins, which
is why those are shown as No Connect. The HDAudio chip still runs
in HDaudio mode, uses the Microsoft UAA software, and an HDAudio
driver. It is just the wiring mode that is AC97 compatible, to
allow the header to work with most computer cases. I still haven't
seen a computer case mentioned, that has proper HDaudio wiring.
So using the AC97 header mode is "normal" at this time.
There should be a BIOS setting "Front Panel Support Type" and
it should be set to [AC97] when the computer case wiring is
connected to the header.
In this case the RET_L and RET_R wires are not used, and
can be left dangling. Only the five loose wires are needed.
And I see in the manual, that the ADH header is not documented.
One web site lists ADH as "Azalia Digital Header". I looked in
a few manuals, and none of them document what the header
does or its pinout. A mystery for another day...

The Asus board has a Front Panel audio connector that this should plug
straight into. It's on Page 2.33 of my copy of the manual.
The Antec web site FAQ for the Sonata states:
5. The audio wiring harness in my Sonata does not match the
description in the manual. How should I connect it?
Please follow these directions to make your Audio Connection.
There is an Intel standard 10-pin connector (with also 7 individual
wires with individual connectors) attached to a gray wire leading from
the front panel speaker and microphone connection. If your motherboard
supports Intel's standard onboard audio connector, you can plug the
10-pin connector directly onto the board. For non-Intel standard audio
connections, you need to plug the 7 individual connectors into the
motherboard.
Instructions for non-standard audio connections.
1. Locate the internal audio connectors from your motherboard or sound
card.
2. Consult your motherboard or sound card manual for the pin-out
positions.
3. Microphone Power Pin: Connect the MIC connector to this pin.
4. Microphone Input Pin: Connect the MIC-BIAS connector to this pin.
5. Ground Pin: Connect the AUD GND connector to this pin.
6. Front Right Speaker Out Pin: Connect the FPOUT-R connector to this
pin.
7. Front Left Speaker Out Pin: Connect the FPOUT-L connector to this
pin.
8. Rear Right Speaker Out Pin: Connect the RET-R connector to this
pin.
9. Rear Left Speaker Out Pin: Connect RET-L connector to this pin.
Note: Your motherboard may not support rear speakers output. In this
case you do not need to connect RET-R and RET-L. >> Stay informed about: ASUS P5B DELUXE - cable connections help please |

Thanks Paul and ChrisW
Could you please check if the Microphone Power Pin is MIC BIAS or just MIC
Paul says different from you:-
MIC -----------> MIC2 X X AGND <--- AUD_GND
MIC_BIAS -----> MICPWR X X NC

NC X

OK, I vaguely remember the answer to this one. Antec made a mistake on
one of their cases, where they labelled MIC and MIC_PWR wrong on the ends
of the wires. To compensate, they changed the instructions, telling the
users to connect MIC_PWR to MIC and MIC to MIC_PWR, if you get my drift.
Nothing bad would happen if you reverse them. In many cases, an Electret
microphone actually shorts tip and ring together, inside the microphone.
So it wouldn't matter if the wiring was reversed. If you connect an
Electret, and aren't getting any signal, you can try reversing them.
If you are using some other kind of microphone (a passive), then a lack
of signal seen would be a dead giveaway that the wires need to be
swapped.
In terms of how this should be wired, the first line here, is a
list of the three signal contacts on a 1/8" plug, and the second
line, is the names of the microphone signals used. This is "standard wiring"
at the plug level.
Tip, Ring, Shield <---- the names of the three contacts on a 1/8" plug
MIC, MIC_PWR, GND <---- (Signals for microphone usage)
Tip, Ring, Shield <---- the names of the three contacts on a 1/8" plug
LEFT, RIGHT, GND <---- (Signals for headphone usage)
You could for example, use a multimeter, set it to ohms, then verify that
the wire marked "MIC" is the same as the Tip of the 1/8" plug. To do that,
you'd plug a short 1/8" male to 1/8" male audio cable, into the front
of the computer case, so you can touch the "Tip" signal on the plug, and
verify it is the same signal as the wire marked "MIC". An ohmmeter reading
of "zero ohms", tells you when two things are connected, or are the same
wire.
If you are still having problems, post back.
