Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>asus (more info?)

I have this motherboard, but it seems no matter what external HD
enclosure I use, my speeds are only SATAI speeds using HDTach 3.0.

If I plug the drive directly into one of the onboard connectors.. I
get around 209 for the burst speed.. but using the esata port I only
get about 125 burst.

Both external enclosures are rated at 3.0 gb/s, but fail to come
anywhere near this rate.

Is this port merely a 1.5 Gb/s, or is esata really only performing at
1.5 despite being a 3.0 speed port?

Thanks

I did use a converter with both enclosures just now, connecting them
to the main board regular ports.. i got the full 207 burst, so the
esata must be 1.5 gb/s....

I couldn't find too much relevant on the SIL3132, and what I could
find was not encouraging. One guy got 147MB/sec burst in RAID 0
with two disks. And his suggestion (without evidence) was that
perhaps IRQ sharing had something to do with it.

The user manual for your motherboard (doc e2708), has an IRQ table.
And the info in the table is a bit hard to believe. It would
appear that the chipset and the four PCI Express slots, all
share the same physical interrupt signal. But for some reason,
LAN2 (they didn't bother to identify it by chip name) and
the SATA controller (called PCI bus, when it is PCI Express)
seem to be on their own interrupt line (line "D"). Disabling
LAN2, would mean the driver would not be needed, and should
not interfere with things. You could try disabling the
LAN interfaces, and see if the performance changes. But
don't hold your breath...

It is funny, because the internal design of the SIL3132
looked so promising. It is one of the few devices that can drive
Port Multipliers. But if the bandwidth offered is not optimal,
it would be a poor candidate for any application like that.

Thanks for the info.

I tried disabling wan2.. in fact.. i disabled both wan ports.. but the
performance was still the same.. around 125 MB/s burst as before.

Perhaps the driver will get an update in Vista eventually, right now
I'm running off of built in Vista x64 drivers, as Asus hasnt released
any official Vista drivers or even any chipset ones.

As a side note: I also found today, that at least at first glance, as
I'll have to verify this.. I took my drive (c) out of its enclosure
(removable rack).. suddenly my load times were flying.. the rack is
rated at SATAII and even performs well by the numbers, but my load
times went from about 52s to the logo of Vista from the last bios
text.. down to about 36s.. fully loaded time (lots of stuff loading at
startup) took about 2m8s.. whereas before it was around 3m55s.

I had previously noticed some sluggishness with this board and Vista
x64.. perhaps my problem was in fact the drive bays.. time will tell
(My work Vista on a Dell 380, runs smooth as silk though).

One other question.. do you know anything about AHCI mode (I guess it
is supposed to enable NCQ on drives that have it?).. I'm not familiar
with this.. I thought the NCQ worked out of the box, provided the
hardware supported NCQ, which I thought this motherboard did..

I noticed some out there saying to enable AHCI to allow NCQ to
work....

Cheers

I have one more thing yet to add (sorry).. Odd.. as i had mentioned I
removed the C drive from its removable rack.. seemed to be flying..
then suddenly on several reboots in a row.. the logo time increased to
over 1 minute.. while the entire load sequence is now at 5 minutes.. I
dont understand what could cause such a wild fluctuation like this..
I'm assuming it is hardware related, not software.
