hello, i'm almost ashamed to ask this question...but can you run a
533Mhz bus CPU
with PC2100? or do you need PC2700? I want to upgrade my board to a
533Mhz 3.06Ghz
CPU but I have 256Mb of PC2100 installed.

Most should work. Check the mobo's manual for a list of supported memory.

You need at least PC 2700 to do what you are trying to do.

It depends on the chipset. This is the table for my motherboard,
which uses an Intel chipset (copied from the manual).

CPU FSB DDR DIMM Type Memory Frequency
800 MHz PC3200/PC2700*/PC2100 400/333*/266 MHz
533 MHz PC2700/PC2100 333/266 MHz
400 MHz PC2100 266 MHz
