Post subject: PSU requirements for the x1950pro question.
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>videocards>ati (more info?)

I have a question about my psu driving my x1950pro. I have been reading
forums and have not found a satisfactory explanation so far.

First, the system: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe mobo | Intel C2D E6600 cup | 1Gx2
Corsair Twin2x2048-6400 ram | Antec Neohe 500wt psu | Sapphire x1950 pro gpu
| 250gig HD | 2 DVD's | Floppy/card reader combo | XP Pro sr2b OEM os.

Here's the question. The Antec Neohe 500wt supply uses Three (3) +12 rails
to deliver power. Each rail delivers 17 amps sustained. That represents 51
amps of +12 volts available to the system. The specifications for the x1950
pro requires at least 38 amps on the 12 volt rail. Does this psu meet the
requirements of this video card?

This psu has a modular system. Aside from the mobo and 4 / 8 pen 12 v
connector, which is hard-wired into the pus, all other lines are plugged
into the psu as needed. I have a separate line going to the x1950pro from
the psu. A separate line to the hd's, optics, and other.

I am hoping that the +12 going to the mobo is a different rail than the
pluggable connectors are supplied. How would I know? If I have a separate
17 amp rail going to the x1950 pro, is everything hunki-dori?

The plugs on the back of this psu have 6 different plugs. How do I know
which is rail 2 or rail 3?

The more research I do on this mobo and gpu, the more I get the itch to
purchase a stronger psu. Some say a 650 wt minimum. Everything on one
rail.

This is all confusing. HELP!

William

More info:

I have found out that on psu's with multiple rails, the mobo gets its own
rail, number 2 all by itself. So that tells me that rail 1 and rail 3 are
available for general use. I still don't know which is which. I went to
Antec's web site and found nothing on rail assignment. However their is a
notice that Antec and ASUS have collaborated on a problem with some
combinations of these two units. ASUS has provided an update to their bios
for this, which is supposed to correct the majority of problems. Antec is
allowing people to send back their psu for exchange if problems exist. A
newer version of the psu has been shipping for months. These problems
between Antec Neohe and ASUS should start to go away.

17
2 *
--------------------------
34 = not 38

38 amps
12 * volts
--------------------------
456 = watts

500 isn't near enough. Make sure you continue buying quality power supplies.

Not all PSUs are the same. I have more stuff in my system than you. I have:
E6600, X1900GT (draws more power than X1950 pro), 2 DVD RW drives, 3 Seagate
SATA drives, 3 case fans and 2 Zalman CPU/GPU fans, plus 3 PCI cards, etc. I
have a Zalman "460W" ultra quiet PSU. It's a high quality PSU. I've never
had any power issues at all. Period. So, don't select a PSU based on the
wattage.

Power consumption for the 7900GS and X1950 Pro, measured by hooking shunt
resistors to the card's six-pin power connector and probing the motherboard
pins:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/x1950pro-gf7900gs_6.html

The X1950 Pro draws about 3A from the slot (which in turn is fed by rail #1)
and 2A from the external six-pin power connector (rail #2 or #3). Nothing to
worry about.

To put things in perspective, an X1900XTX draws 4A from the slot and 7A from
the connector. I ran an X1900XT (clocked about 5% lower than the XTX) on an
Antec 400W without problems.

Hi William

I have an AMD A64x2 set-up with a sapphire x1950 pro agp.
I use an Antec True power 550w with 30 amps on the 12v rail.
I just used a molex from two different feeds to ensure that I was spreading
the load.
I've not had any issues with it... I'd just try it if I were you.
Cheers and hth
Eddy
