Hi,

I just got a Pentax M30 for $180 at Costco and am trying it out. This is an
ultra-compact 7MP model.

Picture quality seems very good to me under indoors and out including an
unlighted room at night.

But when I go outside, the LCD is almost useless. Pushing the shutter
button half-way gives a vague image making it hard to compose but the result
seem very good. I set the LCD for maximum brightness but there was very
little improvement.

One of the functions I want this camera to do well fails badly and that is
voice recording. Whether in the voice record or movie mode, the playback is
too muffled to understand on the downloaded file. The audio is
understandable when played within the camera although the volume is very
low. The mic is located on the front but it seems to make little difference
whether I talk to the front or the back.

In the movie mode I panned the neighborhood outside and all was well until,
at a certain angles, vertical purple lines appeared across the entire
display. The sun was bright and I was standing in a shaded area while
"filming".

At this point I am ready to take it back and get another ultra-compact
camera with an optical viewfinder and better audio capability if it exists.
I also don't like having to use QuickTime for movie playback...it seems a
bit crude compared to MS Media Player but that's just my first impression.

Are the above complaints just due to my being a novice at this or are they
typical for such devices?

Mike

The audio problem is fixed and had nothing to do with the camera. The audio
playback is good IMO.

At least you got it at Costco and can take it back.
I personally think (and you seem to be finding out) that having an "lcd
only" camera makes it pretty useless outside. I've come around to liking the
lcd for composing a picture inside, but I think you still need a "real"
viewfinder when you're in the sun.

Costco has a pretty good selection of cameras online, much better than in
the store.

Actually now that I've practiced a bit I find the camera very useable
outside. The LCD acts pretty much like a mirror but I can see enough to
take the shots and they are turning out well.

The Canon SD600 has an optical viewfinder but does not have the voice
recording feature as near as I can tell from their manual. The Panasonic
Lumix has voice recording but only for up to ten seconds. I think some of
the older Casio models have these features but without image stabilization
and they probably lack some of the features of the latest crop of cameras.

I am delighted with the camera thus far and think it will be a keeper in
spite of the outside LCD performance.

Thanks for your input.

Mike
