Radeon 9800XT DVI

This is a feature of some drivers where you can have a desktop bigger than
the displayed on your monitor.

If you go you Desktop Properties Settings Advanced you'll probably find you
can configure it so that the desktop and display are the same size.

Holy Sh*t!!...you have no idea what I went through to get it to work
again an dI still don't know what I did....ended up doing another
system restore and reinstalling the monitor driver again....let's hope
it stays this way after a reboot!...

Anyway...back to my original question...

My 9800XT has a dvi output and my Samsung 226BW has a dvi input...but
I get no signal...I have now read that there are two types...dvi-d and
dvi-a?...I can't seem to find the answer in google...Is this likely to
be my problem?

My 9800-Pro card is connected to my Samsung LCD monitor using the
DVI-I connector and works fine. I'd guess your 9800XT is similar.

The 9800-Pro user manual says this:
"To connect a flat panel directly to your card, use the DVI-I
connector. To connect a VGA monitor to the DVI-I connector,
plug the supplied DVI-I-to-VGA adapter into the DVI-I connector,
then plug your monitor cable into the adapter, as shown below."

You need to check which DVI connection your Samsung needs and
make sure you are using the right connector to the graphics card.

My 9800XT is DVD-I and the monitor is DVD-D....is this supposed to
work with the dvi cable supplied with the 9800XT? It all fits in the
sockets but no signal...

(scroll down to 'connectors' on that page where it says):

"It is possible however, to connect a male DVI-D cable to a female
DVI-I connector"

I believe that is what you have ...and they should therefore connect
and work OK.

Bottom line is that you should be able to connect a DVI-D monitor
to a DVI-I graphics card like the 9800XT. Have you installed the
driver(s) for your Samsung monitor?

Yes a DVI-I connector on a video card simply means that both the analogue
(DVI-A) and digital (DVI-D) signals are present.

If you connect the DVI-I on the video card to the DVI-D on the monitor with
a DVI-D compatible cable it should work.

It isn't working...the cables says "DVI Digital" so I assume that is
DVI - D...i was hoping that I just had to tick a checkbox on the
control panel for my 9800XT to activate digital-out but I can't find a
setting....

Hmmmm....Yes I do have the digital driver installed for my monitor but
to be honest the monitor acts the same nomatter what driver I chuck at
Windows!

Probably not what you want to hear, but I had a 9800XT hooked to my
SyncMaster 226bw via DVI and it worked fine. It was just plug and play.
Never had any issues.

Yep....it just switches back to analogue as it can't find a digital...

That looks like the problem. When was that article dated?

As you can see some other folks incl myself have not had a problem
so it looks like an incompatibility between the ATI card and some
TFT monitors.
