Post subject: Radeon X1600 broken!?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>videocards>ati (more info?)

I am having some major issues with my X1600("Made by ATI"), in fact, I
think it may be dead and/or permanently broken.

Here's the deal:

It will no longer output a video signal to the monitor when the PC is
turned on. If I unplug it from the card and plug it in to the
computer's onboard video output, I get signal. When going to the
Device Manger, it doesn't even show up.

Get this, when turned on, the card's fan spins at an unbelievable
rate, we're talking LOUDER than the system's fans. It was doing this
before it died, but it'd only do it for a few seconds(back when it was
working). Now, it just spins that fan like that the entire time(even
though it's not putting out any signal).

I have tried messing with the PC's bios, no luck. I have borrowed a
friend's Radeon X1650, it works fine. I have put this broken X1600 in
other machines, same results(no signal).

I tried getting some sort of warranty support from ATI but, of course,
the warranty was no longer active.

Is my card just dead?

Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be much appreciated! Smile

Your fan (cooling) on the video card might be failing/failed.

I have the:
512MB DDR3 VisionTek ATI Radeon X1600XT , XTREME GAMER'S EDITION

http://www.smokeypoint.com/My_PC.htm

and I had to hang a red lights fan (using tye wraps) blowing outside air on to the X1600XT. The fan is mounted directly in front of the cooling fins and about two inches away on my x1600xt. Plus my custom case has a transparant cover with a blue lights fan built into the cover. So that fan blows air into the area just above my x1600. key word here is "blows outside air into the case" directed across my VisionTek ATI.

Why did I have to do this extra fan thing ? Well the Vision Tek ATI would allow my PC to boot up just fine then the x1600 would go into thermal runaway and the monitor would go blank - no video signal from the card.
I've had the fans there since July 06 and the PC has never failed to deliver 'tox on' gaming speeds I like, each and every time I turn on my PC.

So you might think about replacing your 1600 fan and or on card cooling system.

imho I'd try the extra fan thing first - just in case the card has failed big time - you don't waste a lot of money, just fan money.

Hope this helps,

I appreciate the info and suggestions from you both. I may try another
fan, but it would have to be cheap as I think this thing is,
unfortunately, just dead. Let me ask you guys this: I've heard about
these Radeon Bios Flashers out there, do you think that'd do anything
for my card, or is it sounding more like an actual hardware failure?

Thanks again!

In BIOS, do you see an option to hard-disable the onboard video? May be the
onboard video is conflicting with your X1600 (though it doesn't seem to
hinder the X1650 you put in later). If disabling onboard video doesn't help,
then the card can be considered a write-off.

This is normal for all Radeon X1K-series cards. The fan spins at 100% duty
cycle at boot, then slows to a thermally-controlled speed once the OS begins
loading. If you got two cards in Crossfire, they actually spin down at
different times.

ATi-branded cards carry only a one-year warranty. Next time buy cards from
one of ATi's board partners. Visiontek, for example, offers a lifetime
warranty. I believe Powercolor and Sapphire both offer two-year warranties.

The existing fan on your card is working fine.

It is extremely unusual for a video card to have a corrupted BIOS on its
own. Unless you f---ed with the card's BIOS previously (which may explain
the failure), a BIOS flasher won't help.

I've not ever messed with the Bios, it was just something I had read
about. Well, I guess I can just sell the card on ebay for parts, who
knows, maybe someone will give me $10 for it. Sad
