| Depends what you planned to do.
| I use a 450 for 'office' work, running two monitors with a cloned
| display. It works just fine ( with some limitation as to the secondary
| refresh rate ).

| If you look on the Matrox site there's a handy comparision chart of

Those comparisons are for the MMS series. I somehow doubt the OP had
in mind shelling out $600 or $700 for a specialized multi-monitor
video card.
If there's no thought of future digital output for an LCD monitor, the
standard G450 should be fine. The G550 does have added digital
support for an LCD monitor through inclusion of a DVI connector. On a
CRT monitor, I doubt there would be any noticeable difference in what
would be seen from either a 450 or a 550. I have a 450 in my second
system that I moved from my main system when I bought a P650.
Frankly, output from the 650 looks the same to me as it did with the
450.
Perhaps Matrox will support the 550 for a bit longer than it does the
standard 450, but who knows? They are still supporting G400s and
G200s.
I notice the 550 is only $8 more than the 450 (including shipping) at
Newegg. Both are OEM versions.
