I'm looking for recommendations as to the best digital camera for 1k or
less.

Things I'll likely want to take pictures of include:
My kids playing sports(motion) and at a distance (zoom), Cars both moving
and still. I want to be able to get the whole car in the picture without the
picture looking like it is 25 feet away (wide angle). These are the most
important, but I would also like to capture some stars and moons at night.

We just got our Optio 555 and it has a fairly slow shutter speed especially
when using flash with zero eye. We are considering returning it and going
with the Sony DSC-V1 or something else.

The Sony has some really nice features and operational stuff. People have
reported the batteries don't last more than an hour at most though.

One other thing. The Sony is reported to be really bad in low light.

Actually I've read and been told that it's one of the best cameras in low
light. But the battery life is very short, and the camera doesn't fit the
hand very well (can cover up the flash) but you get learn to work around
that.

Canon Digital Rebel perhaps, then You can buy lenses as Your demands
changes. Itīs the first SLR for less than $1000 and it has got excellent
reviews.

great recommendation. I just got back from a local camera shop and the sales
person has me pretty much convinced that the cannon digital rebel is the way
to go.

Thanks.

Why would anybody want a digital SLR? What exactly is the point of that
other to make the old photo pro feel at home?
