A friend asked me to look into setting up a network for a small
business but I'm a bit new to the networking world. For the basics,
I have configured an 8-port router connected to a dsl modem.
I'm thinking of a separate wireless access point because
of the changing standards (i.e. 802.11n). Also I have a long
run to another area of the business connecting to a 8 or 16-port
switch for additional PCs, network printers, etc.. The LAN does
not require outside access for HTTP, FTP, etc.. It does require
for access to the internet and possibly VPN.

The big question is what are the manufacturers I should focus
on for products and are there manufacturers that I should stay
away from. I want reliable equipment where maintenance is
easy and minimal. Also what is the support capabilities of
the manufacturers when problems arise.

I appreciate any assistance.
