Can I use my Coolpix 4800 to record video directly to my PC hard-disk
by connecting it using the USB cable? What s/w do I need?

If your camera has that capability, the manual should tell you so. If you don't have the
manual, check the maker's Web site. The key is whether the camera can be used as a WebCam.

No, but you could digitize the composite video from the 4800 - using the
cable that connects your camera to a TV - and digitize it with something
like the Asus TV/FM Tuner Card
