Post subject: Refurbished PC, ethernet problems. Help!

Just got a Gateway GT5026E, running Windows XP, and I can't get
online. My ethernet port on the pc is lit, and my modem Internet and
ethernet lights are on. When I try to get online, I get "This page
cannot be displayed." IPCONFIG cmd says "ethernet adapter Local Area
Connection: Media state.....: media disconnected."The Network
Connections icon tells me "network cable unplugged." The same ethernet
cable worked fine on my old computer a week ago, and my laptop (using
wireless connection) is working fine.

Please tell me this might be a simple fix and I don't need to return
the computer or try and solder in a new jack....

PS My ISP tech support help was absolutely useless.

Your NIC is not functioning. Go into the device manager and see if it is
OK or if there's a yellow exclamation point. If it;s not OK try
uninstalling it and reboot and let windows rediscover it.

Opened Device Manager...where would I find the NIC listed? Don't see
it. Sorry -- I'm not a hardware person.

It isn't showing under my DM. I tried installing it into a different
slot and it recognizes new hardware when booting up -- installed
drivers, etc. Still not showing in DM. Could it be the pc and not the
card?

Hey -- after another reboot, it's showing in the device manager. Now
what?

Well... does it work now?
If you still have no networking working, do an IPCONFIG
again and see what that says. Unless I overlooked it, we
don't know about the rest of your network topology so we
don't know exactly how the variables in IPCONFIG should
look, but regardless you should at least be able to ping
that system (IP #) from itself, and if in same range as some
other device, ping and/or access other devices. Given a
router or modem upstream, there should be more changed in
IPCONFIG to designate these things like perhaps a Gateway
IP# and DNS numbers.

Thanks for the advice. I tried my ISP and got a "support person" on,
like, theirfirst day on the job. Sad I'll harass the dealer, but I'm
sure I'll end up returning it -- not worth the time investment for
what I paid.

Anytime I have a connection problem, I move to a command window,
and I try to ping my provider or ping google with..
> PING WWW.PLANET.NL
OR
> PING WWW.GOOGLE.NL
If that works out correctly, my browser has a problem,
but if it does not, my connection has a serious problem.
In that case, check your wires, start phoning your provider,
or buy a new router/pay rent to a new provider/buy a new computer.
If all that doesnt get your connection up, start looking for a new hobby. Smile Wink

Shut down your computer, Router and Modem. Wait 1 minute and reboot the
modem. As soon as all the lights are on for the modem then plug the
router back in. Last start your computer up.

That's not the experience I've had. I've purchased several machines
direct from Dell Outlet or Dell Outlet on Ebay and only once had a problem.

In that case, they were unable to fix the fan speed controller so
replaced with a brand new PC of better specification.

Take it back, the NIC is burned out.
