Post subject: Tyan S2665 does not power up with Enermax EG851AX-VH PSU
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>tyan (more info?)

I would appreciate some help with the following problem:

I've been running my system without any problems for 2 months
Intel SC5100 server chassis with stock DELTA DPS-350EB PSU,
Tyan S2665 motherboard (BIOS Rev 1.11A),
1 Intel Xeon 2.0 GHz CPU,
2 Crucial 512Mb unbuffered PC2100 DDR modules,
1 Maxtor Atlas 10K IV "Cobra" 36GB U320 HDD,
NVidia Geforce4 MX440 video card

But finally I decided to upgrade the system to the following config:
2 Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz CPU,
4 Crucial 512Mb unbuffered PC2100 DDR modules,
4 Maxtor Atlas 10K IV "Cobra" 36GB U320 drives.

I figured out that I would need some "extra juice" to power up this new
config. So I have also ordered the Enermax EG851AX-VH EPS12V compatible PSU.
http://www.enermax.com.tw/eg851ax-vh.htm

After I received all the new components I shut the server down,
disconnected AC power, disconnected all peripheral devices,
dismounted the motherboard and removed the old CPU. Then I
installed 2 new CPUs and added 2 more memory modules. At all times I
was wearing anti-static wrist strap connected to the chassis.

At this point I got motherboard with only 2 CPUs, 4 RAM modules and video
card installed. I connected the Enermax PSU to the board and flipped
power switch on the PSU. CPU fans have spinned for a second and that was
it. The system didn't start. Pressing PowerON and Reset buttons (connected
to pins 25-26 and 29-30 of the connector J74 didn't have any effect either.
I didn't hear any diagnostic beeps.

I connected the old DELTA PSU. The CPU fans started spinning at full speed
right after I plugged in the power cord but system still didn't start. Then
I removed the CPU from CPU Socket #2 and system with single 2.66GHz CPU was
able to start with the old 350W DELTA PSU. I replaced the CPU in Socket #1
with the CPU I removed from Socket#2 earlier - the second CPU also works in
the single CPU config with the old DELTA PSU.

I tried this new ENERMAX PSU with Intel SBT2 server board with 2 Intel
Pentium III Xeon 866MHz CPUs installed - it worked just fine.

So far I have 2 working Intel Xeon CPUs, 1 working ENERMAX EPS12V
compatible PSU, 1 working (at least in single CPU config) Tyan S2665
motherboard - which do not work together. What did I miss? What is wrong
with using this PSU with the Tyan board I have?

Silly question but, do your two 2.66 CPU'shave the same spec number?

yes both CPUs have the same Spec number - SL6NR
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/details.asp?sSpec=sl6nr" target="_blank">http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/details.asp?sSpec=sl6nr</a>

also I've tried 4 configs:

1) DELTA PSU + 1 CPU + 4 DIMMs + VIDEO (no other devices connected)
the system starts right away after power cord is plugged in.
I tried all 3 Pentium Xeon CPUs I have got - all of them work.

2) DELTA PSU + 2 CPUs + 4 DIMMs + VIDEO (no other devices connected)
the system doesn't POST, CPU fans are spinning at full speed
Pressing reset/power buttons doesn't have any effect

3) ENERMAX PSU + 1 CPU + 4 DIMMs + VIDEO (no other devices connected)
the system doesn't POST, CPU fans spin just for a second after flipping
the switch on the PSU. Pressing reset/power buttons doesn't have any effect

4) ENERMAX PSU + 2 CPUs + 4 DIMMs + VIDEO (no other devices connected)
the system doesn't POST, CPU fans spin just for a second after flipping
the switch on the PSU. Pressing reset/power buttons doesn't have any effect

The Enermax power supply should have a couple of adapters (24 to 20 pin and
a 24 to 24 pin). I assume you used one of them to connect the supply to your
P III board. Did you use the other (ATX GES connector) on your S2665 or did
you connect the supply directly without an adapter.

The ATX-GES connector has a different voltage output sequence and if used
could have damaged the s2665.

Is this a possibility?

Enermax EG851AX-VH is EPS12V compatible right out of the box - no adapters
needed.

I didn't have to use any adapters for the SBT2 board either. So far I've got
RMA# from Tyan

but I'd hate to send perfectly working board back to them. I still believe
that I'm missing something.

Alex, you seem to know what you're doing and I can't think of anything else
other than all the simple things which I'm sure you've tried. I agree that
it sounds like a motherboard problem. Perhaps, a component was close to
failure and the surge of power from restarting the machine pushed it over
the edge. Don't know. I had a Tyan S1696 that died after I simply set the
BIOS to the defaults and rebooted the machine. Best of luck!

By the way, after a 5 week wait my S2665 is arriving this Monday. How do you
like the board other than your recent problems?

Doug
