Do SATA hard drives have different power connectors than regular PATA
harddrives? If so, can you get an power connector adapter? I was
looking at a seagate manual for thier SATA 80 Gb hd and the power
connector sure looked like it had many more pins.

Howdy,

Yes they do. Some of the newer power supplies come with them I think .

Antec TruPower 430W PS comes with them. A lot of motherboards now come with
them. Some hard drives come with both types of power connectors (WD Raptors
is the one I'm familiar with). So, yes, adaptors should be available. It's a
single row of flat pins, but I think its the same number.

Adapters are definitely available, I bought an Abit KV7 motherboard and that
come with SATA cables + power adapters which convert the standard power
connecters to the type on SATA drives.
Although it does bid the questions why do SATA have different power
connecter types?

Thanks to all. The 80 Gb Seagate drive I saw for sale was for $74 with
no cables, no s/w, no manuals.

That about what I paid for the same SATA hard drive. The power adapter and
drivers come with your motherboard. If you're going to install Win2K from
scratch, be warned that the drivers must be in the root directory of a
floppy disk on A:. That's even though you are booting from the CD drive.

Drivers and SATA cable came with mobo, but PSU has regular connectors,
not SATA.

SATA drives have different data and power connectors, but some have both the
new SATA type and "legacy" four-pin Molex connectors installed. My WD
Raptor drive has both type power connectors, as I assume do some (all?)
others.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
