So as I understand it if you dont want to run RAID you should set all in
IDE FUNCTION SETUP to ENABLED & all in RAID FUNCTION to DISABLED?
Im not running RAID & this is how my bios is setup.
I ask because my KN-8 Ultra based system has slow down problems that I
seem to be able to cure if I replace a SATA cable every couple of months
(wierd), Im now using AKASA silver SATAII cables (best you can buy?)but
the problem persists, brilliant for a few weeks then a gradual slowdown
to the point of being ridiculous, programs take forever to open with
sporadic freezes. I cannot keep buying SATA cables for ever (or can I?
theyre cheap enough!), obviously theres an underlying fault but what?
memtest shows memory ok. Drives are defragged with Diskeeper11.
Im using the latest bios (v19).
also nForce drivers v6.86

Anyone any ideas?

system details:-

KN-8Ultra mobo
AMD64 3200 Venice (E2)
EVO33 cpu cooler
Radeon X800 GTO2
1GB Crucial DDR
Seasonic S12 500W PSU
2x200GB Maxtor Diamondmax10 drives
XP pro (fully updated)

thanks in advance

It would appear certain Maxtor SATA h/drives do not like nForce4
controllers, nice of Maxtor to let us know isnt it. A firmware flash is
possibly needed dependant upon model/serial no.

Re flashed drives (thanks for the firmware Maxtor) computer ran a little
better (drives quieter), still the same problem with computer slowing
down over a number of weeks though I may have found the problem.
Looks like constant background defragging could be possibly magnetizing
drives (just a guess), when sata cables are removed, left for a couple
of hours, re-connected, computer runs smoothly & fast before slowing
down rapidly.
Stopped constant background defragging & problem has gone, computer runs
great & I havnt had to disconnect/reconnect sata's.
