I just built a SN41G2 for my grandaughter.
It has an AMD2500 barton and all seems fine after a few goes at getting the
cooling right.

Problem is with the memory. With 512M pc2700 Crucial ram it works fine. When
I added a 256M strip of same ram in second socket, Windows XP hangs during
startup.

Tried the 256 on its own and thats fine too Also tried swapping sockets but
with both strips in it hangs.

Any ideas?
Thanks for any help
Regards Philip

The nforce2 chip set works best with two dimms. In fact memory runs twice as
fast in this mode (this is unusual but great)
However the dimms must match exactly.

If you are using the onboard graphics you need top quality matched dimms.
I must admit I gave up with the on board graphics as it was too slow. So
many people seems to have memory problems with it too.

What do you mean "The Dimms must match exactly"? as in speed, make and or
size?
I'm confused, I hope you mean exact speeds.

If populatng both DDR slots the RAM must be identical to run in dual channel
mode. There have been many issues with different types of ram compatibility,
especially when using the on-board graphics. Basically your system will fall
over everytime at the moment - as a bare minimum the two sticks of ram
should be (a) the same size - mixing 256MB and 512MB will not work, same
speed i.e. PC2700 or PC3200 etc and ideally, the same manufacturer, I cannot
remember if crucial ram is known to work with them or not.... I know that
Kingston, Samsung, Geil, Mushkin and Corsair are all known to be good..

I bought my single stick from Crucial (not running in dual channel mode,
obviously). Quick and simple and well-priced, with an all-important
guarantee of compatibility or your money back (not something many
box-shifting retailers will offer). When the part arrived, it seemed to
have a slightly different stock number and when I cross-checked it turned
out to be Crucial's generic ram, at the same price. No obvious memory
problems with it.

Order that second matching stick - SO much better performance from the
system, especially the onboard video, which is actually pretty decent with
dual high speed sticks.
