I purchased the little two port USB adapter that goes into the top rear
opening on my Shuttle. Unless I am completely missing it I do not see any
available headers to connect it to. Do I need to remove one of the existing
connections in order to use these ports? I would be pretty irritated if that
is the case, but at least I would know. -TIA

At the front left corner of the FN85 motherboard there are three usb
headers. A 9 pin header and two 5 pin sockets. On my SN85G4V3, the
usb card reader uses one of them.

I located that connection to the daughterboard for the media connector I
presume that I don't have. I connected the new rear ports to that and they
work just fine, almost. For some reason my USB ports are pretty flaky (not a
new problem). After a random time interval a device will just just stop
working. I use a wireless Linksys USB NIC and it connects fine when I first
power up, but then it will just drop the NIC from the system. I had a USB
hub attached to a port and after a random time it would cut off the devices
and the hub. I use a USB keyboard and mouse and they do not appear to be
effected like the other devices. Strange. This occurs on both the front and
rear ports.

Check to see if there are any power saving settings for the usb ports
and disable them. You should find those settings in the device
manager for the ports.
