Yes but you'd have luck in museum because I haven't seen one for
years. At best you'd find one that handles CF (not Microdrive), SM,
and MMC. If it has memory stick slot, it defiantly won't support PRO.
If your laptop is running Win98se or later and has a PCMCIA slot, get
an USB PCMCIA card and a cheap USB memory card reader.

Or just plug the camera into a PCMCIA USB adaptor...
Or just a buy PCMCIA card which has the relevant card reader built in...

Microdrives are thicker and some slot are only designed for CF1 cards.
Also standards are still developing on newer larger cards. My old PDA
for example came out long before GB sized card came out and it can't
handle 1GB well.
There are probably more but dunno.

If your notebook has a PCMCIA slot, it will work, though it may not be able
to see the entire drive for very old versions - 3.1 or earlier - of windows.
Win98SE is not needed - PCMCIA is pin compatible with CompactFlash, so CF
will work with just about any version of Windows, even pre 3.1 DOS, Linux,
Macintosh, BSD, or any system that supports removable PCMCIA drives.

Ya, that's a problem for alot of devices. I don't think it's necessarily
the physical format, but formatING issues on how big a card they can
"see". Similar happened several times as IDE HDDs got bigger and bigger.
That's why it's always a good idea to check the manual before getting the
latest, greatest, fastest, biggest card
Bummer on the Microdrives though.
I can think of a couple devices that I have that I thought it'd work in
that it likely won't from what you're saying.
I must say, the flash card format situation is particularly annoying as
far as "format wars" go.
The on that pisses me off the most are xD, mini-SD, and all of damn Sony's
proprietary ones. Totally unnecessary. Most things they've got taking SD
could have easily fit the cheaper and larger max. size CF, but nooooo,
that'd make too much sense, we need super-duper-mini-pinhead card format.
ARG!

Well, this is good news!
Next Q is, can I still find a PCMCIA16 card (as it's not 32/Cardbus)?
A bitch to find since most advertisers (ebay or anywhere) don't even know
that there were 2 diff. types, so it takes forever to weed thru
If anybody reading this knows of one anywhere (used ok), give a holler!

Really?!
Any limitation to size?
They still would be really slow though probably though, although I dunno
how fast PCMCIA16 is, or what the card datarates are.
If it's EPP port, might be ok.
What types can it read?
Would it take a Microdrive, or was it made before that?
Can I buy it off ya?!

Yes that annoys me too. I have a mini SD card cuz a cell phone
required it and that thing is almost smaller than xD card. The worse
of the card war would belong to micro-SD. Smaller than a US dime and
easy to lose. Dropped it in a shag rug? Forget it! Your pet dog
inhaled it? Probably cheaper to replace than a visit to vets. Can't
remember where you left it? Forget it by the time it's found it'd be
a museum piece some centuries from now.
RS-MMC, Micro-SD, mini-SD, SD, MMC, SM, CF1, CF2, Microdrive, xD, MS,
MS-PRO, MS Duo, MS-PRO Duo... also that "smart" memory card that are
used in laptop and also works in standard USB ports... did I forget
any memory card type?

Hi. The product is a CameraConnect by ActionTec.
It has two slots: PCMCIA (16-bit) and CF. The docs state it will also read
SmartMedia if you have a PCMCIA-to-SmartMedia adaptor. Has a pass-through
keyboard plug for 5V power.
This is a vintage-1998 product; it comes with drivers for DOS and Win95.
Perhaps updated drivers exist on the net; I stopped following this years
ago. I have no idea what capacities it supports or if it would work with
a Microdrive.
I have absolutely no use for this; IIRC I probably used it once or twice;
it's sitting like new in the box. If it would make you happy, I'd gladly
sell it to you. >> Stay informed about: Serial port memory card reader/writer? |

You are absolutely correct, but most people use both terms incorrectly, so
I specify
I can't tell you how many ebay ads I've waded thru, had to email to double
check, and of course they had it wrong. With 0% success and tons of
futile effort, I finally gave up. But, recently lucked out here! Pays to

Anyway, glad there's at least 1 other person who knows the right ones
