My colleague has an unknow make machine, maybe custom build. It has a
Duron Processor, reported at speed 755MHz. As it is a Socket A, can he
upgrade using any Socket A processor? He only wants to go to say
1.8Ghz. Is it simply a case of taking out one socket A processor and
replacing with another ? And maybe taking into consideration extra
cooling requirements ?

Generally, yes, but the MB may limit the default speed of the cpu. Socket
A CPU's have been out of production for some time. It could be very
expensive to upgrade the cpu unless he can find a used one under $25. Just
to give you an idea, the XP 3200+ (fastest made) is selling for about
$275 retail now. Fry's electronics recently had an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ dual
core cpu with MB on sale for $89 that's more than twice as fast as the
3200+XP. So upgrading his socket A cpu is pretty much a total waste of
money. Should he proceed, there's lots of info in the my server link below
that will help. I'd need to know what MB make and model he has to offer
options.

A BIOS update will probably be necessary to recognize the newer CPU.
It may work more or less correctly without the update. A 755 MHz
Duron sounds a little slow, possibly a setup issue? Depending on
the motherboard and installed memory, memory speed may be significantly
increased with a newer CPU.

socket a 400 fsb - does anyone know if there is or will be a socket a cpu that uses a 400 fsb. i am looking at a asrock k7vt6 motherboard as a possible replacement for my present system.

amd socket a - does anyone know if they are still working on making newer/faster socket a (462) cpu. if not, which is faster. athlon xp 3200+ or sempron 3000 both have 512 l2 cache.

Socket-7 -> Socket-462 adapter? - Hello All, Does anyone know of an adapter to let an amd K6-2 processor run on a Socket A mainboard? First guess is this would be like trying to breed a turtle with an elephant, but ehhh.. what the hell, the question is free =)

Socket 939 worth the wait? - Hello Is Socket 939 which is be released in May (Is this correct or is it April), worth the wait for those who are ready to build a AMD64 system? Thanks in advance.

Socket A & 754 Sempron caution. - I don't know if this is well known or not but AMD has used different criteria in giving the Sempron line of cpu's its PR numbers. So don't buy a Sempron 3100+ expecting it to be faster than an Athlon 64 3000+. Because it's nowhere close to as fast. AMD..
