Sony Spressa USB - why can't I put a hd in it?

It's like this, someone gave me a Sony Spressa USB enclosure left over
from the year 2000. It comes with a Sony CRX120E CD-R which works fine
but I really want a hard drive enclosure. If I toss the CD-R and plug
in a hd it spins up but XP (on a laptop pc) doesn't show the usb icon
in the taskbar. The drive doesn't show up in WE either. If I flip the
IDE 40 pin over, the icon shows and the hardware wizard pops up (but
can't find the drivers) but the drive doesn't spin up. Any idears,
dears? cheers.
