Hi all. I'm looking for recommendations for a 2-3 MP digital camera that can
use something besides USB (preferably serial) to download the pictures to
the computer. Why? Unfortunately we are still stuck with WindowsNT here at
work and it doesn't support USB.

We had also looked at media readers, but most of those are USB as well.

So if anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

Thanks
Brian

If you are in the USA contact me with a valid address.
I have an Olympus D460 I'm sure you'd like.

It's silly to limit your camera choices based on serial I/O, and an
OS that's no longer being supported. I'm not aware of any decent
2-3MP cameras that use serial I/O -- transferring images via serial
port is horribly slow -- e.g. a 64MB CF card, even with a serial
card reader, will take the better part of 2 HOURS to transfer.

Instead, look into installing Win2K or WinXP on one or more
workstations for your image transfers (best option), or at least try
and find a parallel port card reader for your NT workstations.

Well, its not my choice of OS. I just said serial I/O because that's what
our current camera uses. Anything compatible with NT would be acceptable.
The nice thing currently is that any of our users can download the pictures
right onto their PC. Anything solution requiring extra hardware or software
changes means rolling out the change for each user.

Ah, now we are talking. Although I'm not sure how much faster parallel would
be over serial.

The Sony Mavica MVC FD 95 is a 2M pixel camera that stores on floppy
disk
or Sony MVC CD 500 a 5M pixel camera that stores on a built in CD/W

why don't you get the service pack for WinNT? that will enable USB
connectivity..
i wouldn't get a serial camera, if they even make those anymore..
you might have to get a USB --> Serial cable.. thats going to create a huge
bottleneck..
you really should stick with USB.
you know, it doesn't take much power and money to get a digicam to work on
any old pc.. you could buy a cheapo system dedicated for this purpose..

I strongly suggest You try to find a reader for parallell conection.
They should still be available. Then You are not limited in the choice of
camera.

That's exactly what we want to do, but I haven't been able to find one yet.

Hi, there's some easy work-arounds that makes it possible to run USB on
WinNT. Try the link below and good luck.
