My existing system (about 1.5 years old):
Biostar 6100-M9 MB
AMD 64 3000+ CPU
2x 1GB RAM
removed my existing video card (nvidia 7600GT), used just onboard video
for a few weeks.
Bought a Biostar 7900GT card off of ebay. Installed it, and it is not
working right. From the first boot into BIOS, there are weird things,
like: some characters in the BIOS selections are differnet colors, and
some of the characters are wrong (show a 'N' instead of a 'g'. Just a
few wrong letters on each screen. I think that the wrong letters stay
the same with each reboot.
Windows boots fine, I had removed the old driver, installed the newest
from nvidia. Now, any time the screen is displayed all black, there are
several pixels lit up. I can see a few dozen pixels in the Windows
background that are the wrong color, or black.
Tried playing a game, Halo, and it plays well, except there are weird 3D
streaks running through the game. Game has had some problems crashing, too.
I updated the BIOS to try to fix... no change.
The 7900GT has an extra 6-pin power connection. I did not have one, so I
made one (3 12+V, 3 COM). Works the same with and without this
connected. It detects when it is not connected, and tells me it has
slowed the card down to protect it. Fine.
Any ideas?

What about your power supply, made model and wattage?
I always wonder why people don't consider it a "major"
component, especially since there is more variability and
consequence from what it is, than with many other modern
parts.

I suspect the card is bad, you might try flashing the bios
on it, but the preferred remedy would be returning it to
seller for refund before, not after trying to flash a new
bios.

Do you mean the card bios or mobo bios? It'd be the card
bios if it were either, but odds are the card is bad. I
don't rule out PSU problems completely but this is a typical
bad-card symptom (and also an example/reason to avoid ebay).

Use a multimeter to measure the 12V level while a game is
running. You can expect a minor voltage drop but (on the
card solder joints for the connector) it should be very
minor, let's say about 0.2V at most (and really this much is
a lot but there should be some margin here in what it could
tolerate), but I don't have that card to determine a
specific drop vs connector vs wire gauge estimate. IOW,
11.8V of clean power from a good PSU is going to work fine,
while an average of 12.0V of high-ripple power from a poor
PSU might not do as well... but not to distract from the
initial impression, most likely the card is just bad and you
should return it for refund. >> Stay informed about: Upgraded video card, now BIOS goofy |

needs extra power through that 6 way and it sounds like your home made cable
is not doing the job.
do a google for the card, some pictures show the cable required. The ebay
seller should have supplied you this cable.

yes it is a variable, but personally I've made tons of power
cables, for years, and can accept that if someone feels
competent at making one, there is the possibility it is at
least as good, if not better, than the stock cable it would
replace. I leave it up to the OP to decide if it's a
problem or possibility, though I did mention the issue of
voltage drop, unless it is intermittent it should be fine if
there is no excessive voltage loss. >> Stay informed about: Upgraded video card, now BIOS goofy |

The manual says that performance 'will be lower' without the 6pin power,
so I didn't hesitate to run without it. I can't imagine why mine would
not work. But, I have ordered a few on ebay to make sure...

Corrupted characters or random pixels flashing, are systems I've seen in the
past of a video board that has developed bad ram, usually do to over
heating. It was quite common a few years ago.
just a thought.

My power supply is a question. The system is in a microatx case, I have
the most powerful matx PS I can find, 430W. I have no other cards, 430W
should be enough.
I flashed the MB BIOS.
I will check the voltages. I have never seen low voltages, even from a
bad PS that was causing problems. Seems like most problems are with
unclean power, which the DIYer doesn't have ability to check.

Mike, it the computer boots without crashing then your power supply is good.
If things are so bad as to effect the video card, I doubt the system would
boot at all. >> Stay informed about: Upgraded video card, now BIOS goofy |

You still didn't mention specifics of PSU make and model.
Odds are, your PSU is not strong enough to run that video
card. It's very unlikely to be a true 430W PSU, about 200W
is all that can be reasonably obtained from a mATX PSU, or
if it is the most optimal possible towards your goal (a
newer ATX revision devoting most of the current to the 12V
rail), "maybe" it's worth ~ 300W or so. IOW, it is
certianly underpowered for your current system but I suspect
that would become a factor of longevity, that it'd die
young, while your immediate symptoms are more likely the
video card itself (was already damaged).

>unclean power, which the DIYer doesn't have ability to check.
Yes unclean can be harder to pinpoint without a scope, but a
couple fundamentals remain- if the capacitors aren't vented,
and not terribly undersized per the current drawn by the
system, a basic multimeter check to confirm none of the rail
voltages are falling excessively high or low is a good
start.
Also consider the 12V current rating of the PSU, since your
system draws more power from that rail than any other.
Generally speaking, a rough recommendation would be to have
a PSU worth about 18A on 12V rail with that video card,
though it might run at lower actual current but may shorten
the life of the PSU as mentioned above. Essentially, with a
mATX PSU powering the system, your prior 7600 card was a
very good mate as it is one of the best performance:power
ratios available... just getting a little on the slow side
for more demaning modern games. >> Stay informed about: Upgraded video card, now BIOS goofy |

Everything points that way.

If you can record all the misspellings, then you may be able to
identify a particular failing bit.
For example, if you really meant "show an uppercase 'N' instead of an
uppercase 'G'", then here is the bit difference:
N = 4Eh = 0100 1111
G = 47h = 0100 0111
^
This is the faulty bit
This could point to a fault in the card's video RAM.
I suspect that either NVIDIA or the graphics card manufacturers have
diagnostic utilities to exercise the GPU and RAM chips, but I have yet
to find such a utility on the Net.
