I am having trouble with getting a VA503+ mainboard to recognize my
sound card. I've tried two different sound cards with the same result,
no sound. The audio cards were the following: AudioExcel 512 and
Guillomet Maxi Fortissimo. The drivers loaded fine for both cards and
they are recognized in the system applet within the control panel.
When I try to play an audio CD a dialog displays indicating that no
sound device is present. Furthermore, I know both cards work fine, I
tried them on another machine. I suspect there is some issue with the
MVP3 chipset and the 4in1 drivers. Any help would be appreciated. >> Stay informed about: VA503+ and no sound with AudioExcel 512. |

What OS are you running? Do you have any sound at all, such as system
event sounds (wav playback) or midi playback? Is the problem only
with CD audio playback?

Could it be something as simple as not connecting the cable from the CD
drive to the sound card?

I am running Windows ME, and after a bit of time working with the Msconfig
utility, I finally managed to get the sound card to operate. It appears to
be a software startup issue located within the System.ini file. I am going
line by line to isolate the problem, but it still has been elusive. When I
select one and only one line to add to the striped-down file, I restart the
computer only to that it instead highlighted three more. It continues to
elude my efforts. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for all your replies
so far.

If certain startup lines are causing the problem, then why not post
that info so maybe someone can help. No one can troubleshoot a
problem in the dark.

Have a look at this "drivers" block (from my win98se system):
[drivers]
VIDC.MSVC=msvidc.drv
VIDC.RT21=indeo.drv
MSVideo.VfWWDM=vfwwdm.drv
wave=mmsystem.dll
midi=mmsystem.dll
wavemapper=*.drv
MSACM.imaadpcm=*.acm
MSACM.msadpcm=*.acm
Here is the same section from another win98se system:
[drivers]
msvideo=gfxnull.drv
wavemapper=*.drv
MSACM.imaadpcm=*.acm
MSACM.msadpcm=*.acm
wave=mmsystem.dll
midi=mmsystem.dll
I don't see anything similar in your system.ini file. Just a gross
observation. I'm not telling you to copy these lines, just noting
that no corresponding lines are in your system.ini file for some odd
reason. Also, your INI file has not section label at the top, that is
odd.
Here's the entire file from one of my systems, i have not deleted
anything but he pwl file names (note I have some sections that are
used by Hurricane tools and should not be found in your file, such as
vrcache, ramexpand, qload and others).

Maybe you forgot to connect the digital audio connector and audio-in
connector with an Audio Cable.

I figured the problem out before I even saw the replies from this newsgroup.
It turns out that the problem was in the [boot] section of the System.ini
file. It is working now! I must comment how well the AudioExcel AV512
performs for such a cheap sound card. Thanks for all the help from you
people in replying to my request for input.
