Post subject: Really Weird (REALLY!) Burning Problem...
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>cd-rom (more info?)

Hello!

First of all I will say that this problem started just today, and I
own this unit (Mitsumi CR-4802TE) for about 2, 3 years; and it burnt
aprox. 200-250 CDs... or maybe more.

The thing is that when I burn a CD-R (at 4x), it writes O.K., but
after that, when I try to read it with the same unit or another it
appears as "Empty". Also, if you look at the bottom of it... you see
the "common" burning circle, but in a "lighter" color than then
'fine-working-previous' CD-Rs.

And it's very amazing that if I try to burn them again... the software
accepts it and starts burning them! And even the red light appears on
the unit too!

After this time, the CD is no longer "burnable", and if try burning
them again or reading... they are just ejected by the unit. Also, now
the burning circle at the bottoms appears a little darker...

But if I try to burn CD-RW (at 2x) they work just fine.

So, my conclusion is that the laser len has somehow lost "power",
calibration, or something... but when I write CD-RW (maybe it's
because I write them on a lower speed ??? ) they are finished O.K....

I do not have any more clues besides these ones, so please, if you
know something let me know if I can repair it, what should I do to the
unit, or if it's better just to buy another one because the reparation
would be more expensive.

Thank you very much in advance; I hope to read your answers.

I've found that when I want to burn images of my OS, just use the
CD-R or CD-r/w media raw right out of the box. When I try to burn
to a cd-r/w it just refuses and says insert a new unused disk, so
I do and it works.
