Hello,

What happened:

-I flashed to BIOS 3912 in preperation of receiving a new XP2400+ and a
new 512Mb PC2100 stick. (needs that BIOS to recognize this CPU)

-Computer worked fine for about a week

-Then, while surfing, it was like someone pulled te power cord out. dead
in a flash.

-On reboot, XP keeps stopping just before the log-in screen appears,
giving PAGING_IN_A_NON_PAGED_AREA mostly and sometimes
IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL as stop-reasons.

I have tried many things. Re-installing XP hangs after install files are
loaded (so before files are compied on to the HDD) so the original
install from before the problems is still working.

-I already replaced the PSU with a 350Watt one, and replaced the HSF, to
no avail. Same problems. CPU temp is around 58ºC btw. I also flashed
BIOS to previous BIOS cleared CMOS and loaded fail-safe defaults, again
without result.

Here's the weird part:

There's only one thing I can do to make the computer boot succesfully,
and it baffles me completely as to why this is possible:

I underclock the Athlon XP1600+ to 1050Mhz. Then it will boot just fine.
On all other efforts on my part it refuses to boot beyond the monitor-
click one hears just before the XP login-screen appears.

Question: what is causing this? Can it be the processor? Can it be
'half' broken? Now, if any system files, or the HDD itself for that
matter, were in any way damaged it shouldn't boot at any clock speed,
right? Why does it boot normally @ 1050Mhz (FSB133) but fails to @
1400Mhz (FSB100)???? It must be CPU or RAM?

It might also be caps on the MB. check for bilging or leaking caps. I
think this board was made when the bad caps were in circulation. If that's
not it, then I'd suspect the ram with an outside chance it's the cpu.

That 58C sounds about 15C high to me. At 1.85v and clocked to 1750MHzm my
1600XP idles at 41C and only goes up to 45.5C under full load with an
Aeroflow cooler. At 1650MHz and normal 1.75v, it idles under 40C.
