I'm looking at the possibility of getting an LCD screen with the 16:9
ratio. But, I want it to have the the same height as my current 17"
monitor (just over 9.5"). Would I be looking at a 19" one then?

In answer to your question, yes, 19 would give you that dimension.

That said, unless your major use for it is going to be HDTV or DVD
viewing or you need the ability to display two pages side by side or
have some other reason for wanting 16:9 go with a 4:3--I went with a
16:9 and find that there is very little material that fills the screen.
For that which does it is very nice.

For what it's worth ... my consideration would be the 4:3 resolution on the
16:9. For example, at 4:3, would I still be able to achieve say XGA at
1024x768 ... and so on. As for height, that's straightforward ... the height
of 4:3 on 16:9 will be exactly the same height as the 16:9 ... what you will
get is grey (typically) bars on each side of the 4:3 display. And that's why
I went with a 4:3 projector, rather than a 16:9 ... my preference is that
the width be the same for both, with black bars top and bottom at 16:9 and
upward.

Honestly, I thought a 19" 16:9 would be good for gaming. I don't
watch DVDs on my PC and I won't be douing that sort of thing, so I'll
probablt go with a 4:3 standard LCD> Also, they're just too

FWIW, on my 16:9 Lara Croft (in the game, not the movie) has put on
a little weight Smile

It's not a serious problem, or even particularly annoying, but
everything is wider than it should be--circles become ellipses and the
like. Of course I could just go back to 4:3 for games but I'm too lazy
to switch modes.

So if I got a 16:9 screen, I would need some special resoolution that
most games don't support? Doesn't the OS, understand what resolutions
are supported and give me the option to choose among those?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Depends on your hardware I think. I'm using an ATI Radeon 8500 board
and with that games which are set to 1024x768 are scaled to 1366x768
without my having to do anything. OTOH, I can set 1024x768 and the
monitor displays that using the center of the screen with black bands on
both sides. The OS doesn't generally change resolutions without user
intervention.

Most games whihc supports "any" resolution (ie they don't have fixed-aspect
UI's and stuff) will probably not let you view more of the scene when
running in 16:9 mode. Probably the game will cut away stuff from the bottom
and top instead, something like the Super 35 movie format.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The 17" WS LCD's that I've seen are 1280x768.... and for more than a
4:3 17" -- which is 1280 x 1024. Why pay more for less real estate?

That is incredibly annoying. Does the monitor force stretching -- or
do you have the option to run at native resolutions?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
