Just set up a new widescreen monitor. Resolution is 1440x900. Have
downloaded a 1440x900 wallpaper/desktop and there are 2 gaps at the side -
what have I done wrong?

Perhaps the size of the task bar at the bottom is causing the picture to be
reduced proportionately.

There's no task bar I'm using it as a second monitor

Is it an analog connection, and if so, have you adjusted the
display driver properties and/or the monitor OSD controls to
make the screen size wide enough?

It might be a silly question but are you sure the wallpaper
is 1440x900 as verified with an image editing program, w/o
gaps?

Not sure what OSD is. I find it on the monitor but all it seems to move
around the screen is the menu.

I have taken my own pic and cropped it to 1440x900 and it still does the
same thing.

On Screen Display, the adjustments your monitor's buttons
provide.

Same advice, look at the driver display properties or the
OSD.

Have used the OSD properties and set it to 1440x900 then downloaded a pic
from wikipedia 2400x1466, still blue bars down each side.

Where do I look at driver display properties, what do I look for?

If you drag an application (Windows Explorer for example) onto this 2nd
monitor and maximise it, does it fill the screen? If not, then your screen
has the gaps, not the image. You need to adjust the image using the
monitor's controls, or in the Windows Display Properties (Right click on
Desktop, choose properties). Choose the settings tab, then probably the
advanced button, unless your graphics card drivers add extra tabs onto the
dialog for display adjustment.

I mean *the monitor's image*, not your 1440x900picture!

In that case, I think your display driver is not set to 1440
x 900 or your Display Settings "Background" tab setting for
Best Fit, Tile, or Stretch needs to be changed.
