Post subject: How add sata drive as additional storage to a 2 ide k8n neo2 plat (7025).
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>msi-microstar (more info?)

I know very little about sata and am trying to install a sata drive as
additional storage to my existing ide system.

I have 2 ide drives with winxp booting from the first. I added to MoBo SATA
3 connection , a seagate sata 300gb for additional storage. I enabled sata
3 and 4 in bios "integrated periph's" page. I initialized and formatted
with XP disk management.

XP sees & I can use the sata drive BUT, XP thinks it is removable hardware
and puts a shutdown icon in the system tray at the bottom right of the
screen, (like when I use an external USB device).

This doesn't seem right so there must be something that I'm not doing or am
doing wrong. Can anyone please help?

Thanks... John

That's because SATA drives can be hot swapped and are removable. You should
be able to go into Hardware Manager select properties>policies for each of
the drives and change from optimize for quick removal to optimize for
performance. This enables write caching to speed things up a bit and on my
system it got rid of the system tray icon. You might give it a go.

Thanks Jimmy,
Took a look at the policies and they were already on "performance" - Tried
changing back and forth a couple of times but no effect. While in there, I
did notice that XP says that my ide boot drive and the new sata are both at
"location 0 on the primary ATA channel". Any idea if that is normal & OK?
Do I need to set it up as a raid with one disk (is that even do-able).

Any other ideas?...

John,

It sounds like everything is exactly as it should be. Stop worrying.

Thanks Mort -- That's what I needed to hear.

Did a little add'l research and from what I was able to get, it looks like
the drive is doing what it's supposed to. HD-Tach confirms that the sata is
on par with my other udma6 133 ide drives. Thanks to all for the help.

I see the same icon on my K8N Neo2. I've heard that it's a function
of the Nvidia IDE driver and that later (beta) driver versions get rid
of the icon. I haven't tested it since I'm not too keen on trying
beta drivers. I wouldn't worry about it.
