what batteries to go with toshiba pdr-m71

I just purchased this camera used.

at time of purchase previous owner brought 4AA rechargable kodaks at
2050mA.. it worked fine.

I brought it home, tried to put in 4 kodaks running at 1850mA, camera worked
for 10 seconds then turned off, going from full battery display to
completely empty. same happened with 4 energizers at 1600mA.

can someone say specfically for this camera what type of batteries need be
used, or maybe comment in general why this would be happening. could it be
a sign of a defective camera?

1. The 1850 and 1600 battries were bad or needed recharge.
or
2. The battery sensor in the camera is not working properly.
3. The camera may have an internal short that causes the batteries to
overheat and trip a fuse, which may or may not reset.
(Batteries with low internal resistance often have such a fuse built in to
keep them from exploding.)
