Archived from groups: rec>video>desktop, others (more info?)

I somehow managed to plug the 6pin end of the firewire cable backwards
into my computer firewire port (angle end into flat end) and now my
Sony DCR-PC100 camera's firewire doesn't work anymore. I looked at a
cable pinout diagram of the firewire cable and it looks like the 30volt
power pin from the computer probably touched one of the data
send/receive pins of the camera. Did this blow out the firewire
circuit on the camera? If so, does anyone know if there's some way to
fix it other than sending the whole unit back to Sony (out of
warranty)? Can a replacement ciruit board be ordered somehow? I don't
see any method for that via the Sony support site. I'll call them in
the morning as well as contact the local camera shop from which I
bought it, but I'm open to any other ideas out there.

I tried it in two computers, the one I was trying to run it on for the
first time (on a brand new generic PCI firewire card), in all of its 3
ports, and the one it's been running on perfectly (built-in firewire).
It shows up in neither now. I also tried two different firewire
cables.

I blew the firewrie board in my DSR 20 deck that way.. My old G4 Mac had
a very sloppy firewire connector a bit bent and abused fron constant
plugging and unplugging, and the cable getting pulled..
Reached behind it to plug in the firwire cable and POUFF... No firewire
connection to the deck..
Total repair cost,, over 1000 quid....
I'm now VERY carefull indeed with firewire.
On a 6 pin to 4 pin cable, if you reverse the 6 pin connector, then you
send + and -ve power to the data lines at the 4 pin end, and fry the
board on whatever you plug it into...!!!!

Believe it or not, I've done this with two Sonys. I'm not aware of any
solution, other than taking it to Sony for repair. They usually have a flat
rate.

I did it on mine too. Rather than repair it, I bought a used sony
camcorder for about $100 with digital pass through off e-bay and
continue to use the higher end camera with the blown board for all
camera work.

That's basically what I did -- I didn't repair the VX2000 (Sony wanted
almost $600) and fixed the TRV-20, instead ($275 repair).
